PX-708A Problems, Return of Slow-Down in a different way...

Postby aviationwiz on Thu Oct 16, 2003 2:30 pm

Has anyone else had the problem where you put in a disk and it starts at 6x like normal, but then, instead of jumping up to 8x, it bumps down to 4x? This has happened to me on my last 4 or so burns.

Firmware is 1.02, DMA is On. Media is Memorex 4x DVD+R (RICOHJNPR01)

Got a reply from Plextor, not at all satisfied with it:

Memorex media is very flakey and can vary widely in quality in a single package. We don't recommend using Memorex media at all.

We've found Verbatim to be the most consistent dvd media lately.

Hello,

I have RICOHJPNR01 Memorex branded 4x DVD+R. Before this media would write beatifully at 8x speed. Now the burn appears to be starting out at 6x (like normal) but then when it gets to the point where it normally jumps to 8x, it bumps down to 4x. Do you have any idea what the problem is? This has happened with about 4 disks now.

Thanks,
Warren

LOL don't tell them you're using Nero. They'll just say that you should be using ECDC because it's the only application that has been "verified" to work with the drive.

Same BS I've been bitching about all along. Also, I think the Nero overburn bug is still there, that's why I'm still getting coasters with 60019 and FW 1.02. Put anything on it near the full capacity of the disc and it craps out still.

Be nice if someone @ Ahead or Plex pulled their heads out of their respective asses and fixed this problem. Too much finger pointing going on.

I had discs within the same spindle that either worked fine or did what you described, but it went away as soon as I upgraded to 1.02, at least as far as I could tell (it could also be that the bad discs were bunched together and that one or two discs before I upgraded to fw 1.02 there were no more bad discs in the spindle).
I had assumed it was the firmware until your problem cropped up...

Since upgrading to 1.02, using mainly Stomp RecordNow Max 4.5 but also Nero 6.0.0.11, the problem has not happened even one single time...

If it happens again, I will return my latest spindle of Memorex within the return period, and probably sell ALL the older Memorex spindles that are also still sealed but beyond the return period.

Maybe the problem is with 6.0.0.19. Have you guys tried to go back to 6.0.0.11 and see if the problem occurs?

I have burned about 5 DVD+R memorex and have burned successfully at 8x with no slowdowns. These are from the same spindle.

I am pretty sure it also happened with Stomp for me, but my problems were before firmware 1.02
I still can't say for sure if it was a batch of media or the firmware, but I am starting to lean toward potential inconsistent media quality as the source of the problem, since aviationwiz has the problem with 1.02.

While I don't have the drive you gentlemen are discussing I for one can vouch wholeheartedly for the abysmal lack of quality control with Memorex media especially the 4x. I do wedding and funeral video transfers as well as some home video as a sideline and recently I bought a 10 pack of Memorex 4x which burnt perfectly, that is they finished without any problems. However I now have to do over all ten of the disks I sold because all of them are pixelating and freezing. I foolishly bought another 10 pack admittedly this was before the wave of customer complaints and only 4 out of the 10 were actually able to complete a burn successfully. Out of those 4 one was for a customer who also complained about the freezing. Luckily the 3 I used for myself were ok. I then ordered a 25 spindle of Ritek 4x redid all my customers' disks and everyone is happy again. I'll never ever use Memorex media again as it could well have cost me a very large portion of if not my entire customer base. I'm sticking to Verbatim and Ritek from now on because believe it or not I've never had a bad disk from either.

Memorex media is very flakey ...

Man, I just purchased a 25-spindle of these guys earlier today, and now I read this. No wonder they were so inexpensive. ($30) Sometimes inexpensive means cheap!

Oh well, I'll have to see how my A06 likes them. It could be worse. (I could have purchased two spindles!)

I've encountered problems with TDK 4x media slowing down at the 80% - 90% mark, now I'm using Memorex 4x media and I've not seen any slow downs so far.

It just happened again.
I am going to sell all my Memorex 4X +R discs, since I would like to burn at 8X.

I'll sell them to five colleagues at work who all have 4X +RW burners.
(One has a dual burner, actually).

EDIT
Correction it was a MCC Verbatim, not a Ricoh Memorex that slowed down!!

I dunno what to do. I'm just about out of Memorex 4x DVD+R disks, Amazon has the great deal at $29.99, but I would like to burn at full 8x, not just sometimes. Oh well, maybe there will be a deal on Verbatim disks next week...

CORRECTION:

I just realized that it was apparently a Mitsubishi Chemicals Verbatim that slowed down, NOT a Memorex!!!

I can't wait till real 8X media comes out...
I think that is really the problem, since the slowdown is not just limited to Ricoh, but also happened (almost sure) with Mitsubishi media (only once with MCC).

Someone rang my phone early this morning, which is why I am awake...

There's still the fact that Plextor considers Memorex media to be "flakey" and doesn't recommend using it. As a Plextor owner, can you just ignore their advice?

Oh yeah, Plextor Support has an attitude problem, they are trying to say it is my media's fault, when, in reality, there is a problem with the 1.02 firmware that need's to be fixed, they just don't want to admit that. Now maybe if I try telling them I was using Verbatim media...
