What will be the maximum speed we'll see for DVD writing?

Postby Coyote on Fri Oct 17, 2003 12:10 am

Everyone has heard of CD-R's getting shattered after reaching 52x or so speed. CD drives have pretty much topped out in performance with reading/writing. So what is the comparison of DVD speed to CD-R drive speed? What are the bitrates for both CD and DVD reading at 1X?

4X DVD = ?X CD-R?
8X DVD = ?X CD-R?

The fastest DVD speed we will probably ever see is 16x. The rotation speed of DVD at 16x is similar to the rotation speed of CDs at 52x.

DVD(KB/s) / CD(KB/s):
1x=1385 /1x=150
4x=5540 /4x=600
8x=11080 /8x=1200
16x=22160 /16x=2400

and the bitrates are...

1200Kbps, 4800Kbps... for CD 1x, 4x...

44Mbps, 88Mbps... for DVD 4x, 8x...
