Anyone know anything about Nu-Tech drives?

A new media compatibility chart has been posted at the Nu Tech site:

It looks like the DDW-081 will write at 8x to both a Ricoh and MCC 4x rated disc. They also show results for TY and MCC 8x discs, so I must assume they have samples to test.

Hi guys just got my new DDW-081 and some Melody 4X (cheap) media to test with, firstly I cooked a movie and then burnt it @4 X with no probs, tried kprobe but got an error 053000 so no good but the burn went without a flaw any other tests???? I can do for you just tell us and I will try my best

DVD Rip speed limit?

using dvd decrypter it took some 40 mins on my amd xp2000+ 512MB ddr 2100...

Also burnt @ 8X on verbatim media that came with drive with no probs (7mins) lotr 2towers I have some jpg of test using dvdinfo and speed test with nero. but have no webspace to post

You did try it with a Lite-On drive? As K-probe only works with Lite-On made drives.

You may try Nero CD-speed for a quality check, or dvdinfopro ( www.dvdinfopro.com )

You did try it with a Lite-On drive? As K-probe only works with Lite-On made drives.

Thanx OC-Freak...the post above yours I mention that I have done those tests but I dont have a place where I can provide a link for the forum users, so if you have a email addy I can send them to, I would be more than happy to email the 3 small jpg,s so that you can link them...the results were excellent for a new 8x burner:)

Tip: If your program supports it, save the images in PNG format to get even smaller filesize. As long as you don't reduce the size of the image the quality will be better than a compressed jpg as well

Just a thing I noticed: The firmware ( BX02 ) looks exactly like an Lite-On firmware, made the same way, same length etc.....

Is there any way that you could snag an image of the top/back/front of the drive?

Tip 2: Images with lots of colors(like pics taken with digital cams etc) is better saved as jpg images......while snapshot/screenshots from within windows is better saved as png. Also if you do not already know: holding down the alt button while pushing print screen button will make an image of the active window only...not the whole image on your screen.

Ahh, update: I see...seamless link.....daughter company of QSI yeah....QSI do also have the same way to build up the firmware as Lite-On I know (my laptop have QSI Combo).

Wow...thanks for all the info on this drive. I'm more convinced now that I'm going to get it. I just wish I would have made the move when the drive was priced at $139

I do have a question. If you are using Nero to burn, does it give you the option of bitsetting? If not, I wonder if the BenQ utility would work, considering they both use Philips hardware.

I will have a look when I get home for you Murse and oc I dont have a digital camera as yet but I do have a webcam that may allow for some average snaps, but Im @ work today and I will also get some kprobe testing for you on the media I used from a friend who has a liteon burner, but that will take a few days.

Well, here's some interesting info from the Nu Tech site:

My interpretation of the last line is that they are planning on making an announcement soon of a dual-layer compatible drive.

Since the current drives use the latest Philips chipset and optical hardware, I wonder if they would be capable of dual-layer burning with nothing more than a firmware upgrade. I don't know that much about how lasers work, but if the current optical hardware could handle it, it could be possible, I suppose.

Nu-Tech has stated that they will be adding DVD-R/RW capability to these drives with a firmware upgrade at the end of November, so maybe there is more potential in this drive than it appears.

I wouldn't be surprised. At CEATEC they were using an HP dvd400i to demo the dual layer DVD+R technology.

NuTek, what were the KProbe read speeds used? Set it to 4X CLV, 'cos I think that's what OC-Freak and Ian recommend.

I just checked the Nu Tech site and they have changed the spec on the DDW081 to be 12x DVD-ROM read (from 16x). So, now, the specs between the 081 and 061 are identical (except for the DVD+R write speed, of course). It would be interesting to see if the 081 firmware would update the 061 to 8x write speed (from 6x). I would find it hard to believe that there is an actual hardware difference.

Will do bhairavp, but you will have to wait a day or so coz i just picked up a new liteon dvd-rom for my sons pc so that I can run the tests myself, the data above was from a friend who ran the tests but I will ask him as well and see if he can do that for me k

The 081 is available through www.unitedmicro.com for $139 shipped -- you have to go through www.pricewatch.com to get this price.

Navigate to the DVD Drives section then search for "DDW 081".

Reading at 1x is better as 4x CLV for K-probe tests.
I don't understand on one hand people want to know how good it compares to a profesional analyzer and on another hand people choose completely different crriteria so that a comparision use by there criteria can no longer be compared.
So really 1x is the best for testing for DVD's at the moment. Since in all other cases all the values like (PI8=280 ) will no longer count.
