New dual-layer DVD+R technology developed by Philips in cooperation with MKM increases DVD recordable capacity to 8.5 Gbytes

Philips will demonstrate its new dual-layer DVD recordable technology at the DVD+RW Alliance booth at the CEATEC* JAPAN 2003 exhibition in Makuhari (Chiba, Japan) from October 7 to 11. Developed by Philips Research in cooperation with MKM (Mitsubishi Kagaku Media)/Verbatim, the technology virtually doubles data storage capacity on DVD recordable discs from 4.7 Gbyte to 8.5 Gbyte while remaining compatible with existing DVD Video players and DVD-ROM drives.

If you really need a DVD writer buy one because there will always be another writer that's faster with more features and cheaper.
EX:when the Pioneer A04 was released it was $500 now they are <$150 and obsolete.

HI.
I read that this new format will come out in 2004.
I am scared of getting a burner now,and after six months.
There is this new dvd dual-layer format,there can hold much
more data.Or am I just paranoid??

It depends (greatly) on your needs.

As mentioned before there is always new technology on the horizon.
I understand 6 months is not too far into the future, so if you can wait, you might, depending on your needs, want to.
Then again, in six months, they might announce something else.

In addition, as you probably know, the newest technology is often expensive when compared to slightly older alternatives.

Yes you have right,I will never getting the newest thing on the market.
Becurse the thing is coming out so fast.
I think I will go for this new Plextor,and injoy the fun of having a dvd burner.
And If I just wait the 6 months,mayby they will as you said announce something new on the market.

many thanks for your help

Do what I did: get a cheap DVD burner (ie, Lite-On's is $109 @ newegg, NEC1300 +/- is $124), and wait for the dual-layer burners. With 12x/16x DVD burners coming soon, it just seems kinda pointless to spend the money on the (very, very sweet) Plextor....

Burnin,

What you just said contradicts with itself. While your saying it seems pointless to buy the Plextor, you are saying that it is, and I quote "very, very sweet"

Lunte,

I would deffinetly recomend the PX-708A/UF, it is a great all around drive, and it does it all. Check out Ian's review of it here:

Yes, it is a great drive. No question about it. But it is also expensive. And with all the new stuff-dual-layer +R, 12x/16x burners - it just seems pointless to get a high-end drive that is going to be quite obsolute very quickly.
Of course, if you don't need dual-layer and 8x is "fast enough", then it is a great drive-the best, IMHO. So unless the 12x burners are delayed (are they still on track for x-mas?), or the dual-layered burners are pushed back beyond "early next year", I would just rather get a cheapie drive that I'm not going to care about getting rid of when the new stuff comes out. Again, IMHO...
Soon to be proud user of Mandrake 10 (again!). SuSE 9 sucks!

Burninman,

I strongly agree. Plextor drive could only be described as sweet. There were some days on which when I got up in the morning, the first thought was to run out and buy this baby. Well, I decided (with much reluctance) to go with the 411 or 811 is Liteon releases it without testing my patience soon.
Stone walls do not a prison make,
Nor iron bars a cage;
Minds innocent and quiet take
That for an hermitage;
If I have freedom in my love,
And in my soul am free,
Angels alone that soar above
Enjoy such liberty. - Richard Lovelace
