disk defgragmenting across different OSs ?

i don't know if this is the right forum...

i put into my XP box a hard drive from another computer running win98. this is the OS hard drive - has the OS and all the data on it.

question:
if i run defrag from my XP os on this machine to defrag the win98 hard drive, can it in any way mess it up?
i mean mess up the win98 OS on it, so if i take the drive out and put it in its original box the OS won't run?
or is it OK?

my guess is that it should be fine, but peace of mind would be nice

I also would think that there would be no problem, although I can't say that I've actually ever tried that. Unless you were to convert the file system to NTFS, the Win98 drive should still work fine when it's re-installed in its computer.

no, leave it as it is (no filesystem conversion), just defragment it using MS Disk Defragmenter Version 1.0 (the version on my WinXP).

i'm sure it works different than Win98's Disk Defragmenter. i was concerned this might cause problems.

I don't think it would hurt. If you're worried about that, maybe you would prefer Diskeeper Lite. It is free, and it works with Fat32 and NTFS (I use it on Win98 and WinXP).

I really like it because, in my experience, it is more effective than the WinXP defragmenting program, and it works on both my Win98 and my WinXP machines. It's also fairly fast.

I love Diskeeper 8. I can set it and forget it, and then it just defrags itself whenever I tell it to (currently 6-8PM) when it needs it. It also doesn't take as long as built in Windows defragger and it tells me more information about the status of my hard drives.

how good a defragmenter is it?
compared with WinXP's defragmenter? with Diskeeper?

That's right. Diskeeper Lite doesn't allow you to schedule automatic defragmenting, but it can defragment just as well as the full version of Diskeeper 7; at least, that what I've heard. I don't know what changes were made in Diskeeper 8, but it probably allows automatic defragmenting.

So far in diskeeper8 I've noticed more pretty useless GUI enhancements. In fact, through informal testing, I find dk8 slower than dk7.
