some badly needed help with the Optorite 0203. please.......

Postby ozziegn on Tue Oct 14, 2003 8:25 pm

okay, I bought this drive last week and I have yet to make one successfull DVD. :(

I've tried everything from the crap software that came with it to DVD Shrink and so on. I could only burn one decent DVD movie but when I'd play it back either on my TV DVD player or my computer, the movie would have certain spots of studdering.

Again, that was my only "decent" burn I've done. All the other 5 DVDs didnt even get that far w/o being turned into coasters. (expensive coasters at that...)

By the way, I've trying to use Memorex DVD+R 4X media if that helps. The writer's firmware is 2.16...

Can someone PLEASE tell me what I'm doing wrong before I give up on this writer?

You didn't mention what burning software you are using.
The software could be the problem...
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

LiteOn 52246S 52X CD-RW
LiteOn 52246S (another)
LiteOn 52327S 52X CD-RW
TDK 40X USB 2.0 CD-RW

I've tried everything from DVD Xpress to Copy2DVD to Nero 6.

I just dont know what to do. I've shrunk the DVD down to 4.5GB so I could write the movie to a DVD+R but like I said, I've gotten nothing but expensive coasters so far.

someone please tell me I didnt end up buying a POS DVD burner.

I don't know much about Optorite, but I thought there was a 201 and 203, yet you mention yours as being a 202?

Is there stuttering when you playback the movie on the 0203 itself?

I too own an Optorite 0203 and I've seen stuttering issues with disks burned by it. But I've also seen stuttering issues in certain players with my older Ricoh MP5125A. It is possibly an issue with the brand of DVD you're using. I suggest "That's" brand 4x rated DVD+R discs by Taiyo Yuden. One of these came with my drive, and I've obtained a few more of these, and they play perfectly in all of my players (excepting for a really old one which can't play rewritable DVDs at all, but that's another story).

"I've shrunk the DVD down to 4.5GB"
Unless this is a typo. that is your problem, the VIDEO_TS folder must be <4.38GB(pref.<4GB).Make sure to add an AUDIO_TS(empty) folder before burning.

BTW..I have a DD0203 and use RecordNow Max($50USD) to burn video,I highly recommend it.You might try a free app. at www.burnatonce.com

well, I dont might paying for a DVD writing program that will actually work with my burner but it'd make me sick to the bone if I shelled out $50+ for a program only to find out that it didnt work with my burner. then I'd really be screwed...

Hardware: Optorite DD0203 f/w 2.11
Software: Nero 5.5.10.42 in DVD-Video Mode
Media: FujiFilm 2.4x DVD+R

Been doing it for 4 months now and haven't made one coaster yet. Gonna upgrade to Memorex 4x DVD+R after I'm done w/ my last cake of Fujis.

How is your Optorite connected on the IDE chain and at what jumper setting? Is DMA on for the Optorite? Got mine on IDE2, Master.

what program do you use to rip or shrink down a DVD to copy it to a blank DVD?

Ripper: DVD Decrypter 3.1.6.0 in File Mode (All)
Compression: DVD Shrink 3.0b5

If the movie gets below 70% in complete disc mode, I do reauthorize and compress just the movie. If it's below 70% in reauthorize mode, split the movie w/ Start/End option.

ozziegn,

First of all, I would not recommend using Memorex media with your DD0203. I have tried many brands and types of DVD media with my Optorite DD0203 (firmware V2.16) and found out:

1. The DVD-R media is the most compatible media format when using with DVD-ROM drives or stand-alone DVD players, including xBox.

2. TDK 2x DVD-R is the only media that I had absolutely no problem with. I also heard that FujiFilm DVD-/+R is one of the best media types, but never tried them yet.

In more than two months of owning Optorite DD0203 I tried burning DVD's using the following brands and types of media: CompUSA (Optodisk) 1x DVD-R, CompUSA (Princo) 1x DVD-R, CompUSA 2.4x DVD+RW, Memorex 4x DVD+R, Ritek 4X DVD-R and Mitsubishi Chemicals 4X DVD+R. Optorite did not make any coasters, but some DVD disks were not recognized by any DVD-ROM or stand-alone DVD player at all, although the "burn process was completed successfully". I had the "stuttering issues" with almost every DVD movie burned on Optorite while playing on my Samsung DVD-C631P stand alone 5-disk DVD changer. Most of them (not all) had the same issues on xBox and even on Optorite itself, and only a few disks played just fine on DVD-ROM drives and stand alone DVD players.

The burned DVD's with "stuttering issues" had the following symptoms: the movie would play just fine at the beginning. After approx. 30-45 minutes of playing an intermittent "mosaic garbage" would appear on the TV screen once in a while. This effect would appear more and more often, breaking up the video until the DVD player would completely stop playing the movie.

I thought that this is an issue with Optorite until I purchased TDK 2X DVD-R media (were on sale in Best Buy, 25 disks for $29.99). I used about 10 of these disks already by backing up my DVD collection, and none of these disks had the issues that I experienced in the past.

I have 30GB WD HDD as Master (with Windows XP) and 120GB Maxtor HDD as Slave (backup drive) on Primary IDE channel, and Optorite DD0203 as Master and Hi-Val 48x24x48 CDRW as Slave on Secondary IDE channel. Here is how I backup a DVD movie:

1. Rip the original DVD to created DVD_NAME\Video_ts folder on 120GB HDD using DVD Decrypter.

2. Shrink the movie using DVD Shrink 3.0 and backup the files in created DVD_NAME\Shrink\Video_ts folder of the same drive. Although the version 3 of DVD Shrink automatically compresses all files to the level that allows all files to fit on a single 4.7 GB DVD, I always adjust the compression manually to make the volume slightly smaller.

3. Open Nero 6.0.0.19 in "Create DVD Movie" mode and add all files from DVD_NAME\Shrink\Video_ts to the red "Video_ts" folder in Nero.

Although I had "Data Verification Error" a few times after burning the disk, I had absolutely no issues while playing these disks on my Samsung stand alone DVD player, xBox, Delta and EPO DVD-ROM drives.

I hope my story will help you to backup your DVD movies successfully. And always remember: DO NOT BUY CHEAP MEDIA! THE CHEAPEST MEDIA IS THE EXPENSIVE MEDIA.

I have gotten the stuttering issue when I use dvd shrink to reauthor, but when I use dvd2one in movie only mode it works perfectly no stuttering. But when I use dvd2one to do full disc I get the stuttering. My friends have been using dvdshrink and they do not get stuttering. We all have different burners, i've got an hp dvd300i, they have nec 1100, and
pioneer -r (i forget the model) but the moral of this story is to use RW's so you don't make any coasters and do lots of testing. it's just strange that what works for some might not work for others....hope this helps...

I'm doing the same thing - using up my Fuji DVD+R's, which are awesome.

Can you let me know how the Memorex media work for your DD0203?
