Apple support of +r format

The DVD+RW support is going to be limited to data backup, but it certainly can't be good news to the DVD-RW camp.

All the signs seem to be pointing to +R as the dominant format of the future. I guess we will have to just wait to see if it really happens.

Not to mention Microsoft announced a few months ago that they were supporting the DVD+R/RW format. [Although I think later on they announced they were going to end up supporting both formats to give users more choice.] It always looked to me over the last 1-2 years or so that the + format was going to win.

Another thing I predicted last year realized. :D

Samsung's also preparing for the launch of 4x DVD+R/DVD-R drive in October. The drive is also based on NEC ND-1300A. Samsung will launch 8x DVD+R/DVD-R drive soon after that.

From what I heard the Samsung was supposed to be a own construction.
On one hand that does make more sens since Samsung allready is supplying a lot of components to third parties.
But still they could have decided in the end to go the easy and safe way and use a NEC N-1300 OEM, so you could be right.

I'm not any less right than those official-looking press release webpages on CNET.com regarding these issues. I get such information via employees at Samsung electronics in Seoul and Suwon. That's why I say: "Samsung's also preparing for the launch of 4x DVD+R/DVD-R drive in October."

From what I heard the Samsung was supposed to be a own construction.

I am not sure what you heard from whom but Samsung Electronics does not and cannot produce the key components to make DVD writers that can sell well. Trust me because that was why one of the key managers moved out of Samsung, Seoul and founded his own company to import ND-1300A from NEC, Tokyo. He once exported Samsung optical drives to NEC and other companies by the hundreds of thousands.

However, they have concentrated on 8x writers for long.

I have a suspicion that 8x DVD+R burning will be replaced with 12x DVD+R burning very quickly! Especially when compared to the length of time between 4x and 8x recording.
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

The own construction was I think from a German magazine. I will see if I can find it back.
Again Not all magazines are as good as C't and then even C't screws up sometimes. But never forget nobody's perfect.

Knowing that samsung had the chipset I didn't found the suppose claim of a own design quite logical at the time. However doing my homework a little better after KennyShin post I found out that the change of the 4x being a Samsung construction is very small. So the option of the drive being based on the NEC-N1300 looks quite realistic.

8x DVD-R might be the end for DVD-R
About 12x DVD+R it will be quite hard. I expect dual layerd disc's might be even befor 12x. This would mean 2 extra zones. Unless there switching to CAV which is theoretical quite good possible with DVD+R.
