Memorex CD-R 50 pack at CompUSA

CompUSA has this week Memorex 52X in 50 pack quantity on sales, buy one and get one for free. The first 50 pack is $20 and second 50 pack is free which it comes to 100 for $20.

By the way, as we all know Memorex is famous for constantly switching CD supplier. The 50-packs I saw at my local CompUSA this evening had the rounded top and gray base packaging typical of Ritek discs, which should be much better quality than the CMC discs Memorex has mostly been shipping the past 6-9 months.

Wow... if Memorex is using Ritek now, they've used almost every supplier of CD-R discs which I am familiar with (CMC, Prodisc, TY, and Ritek).

I know they used CMC and Prodisc for their 48x media. For their 52x media, they have used Prodisc upto now, which I have only seen at Compusa. It would be nice if they switched to Ritek for their 52x media.

Memorex has used other manufacturer's then CMC, Prodisc, Taiyo Yuden, and Ritek, they've also used DST I think, and a few others I was never able to fully identify!

Is there a way to tell who makes Memorex media from the cakebox? I know the ones with the raised high end (and most 10-5 packs with mini or regular jewel cases) are mostly CMC, but what about the ones with the ridged top and smooth top. It's always been a crapshoot with them.

If you can ever find the Memorex 50 packs with the opaque shrinkwap, spin-on cap and "made in japan" these are TY's, but I havent seen any in my area since last summer.

The spindle that has 3 or 4 small plastic rings on top of the CDs are made by CMC. One with a foam are made by Prodisc.

I've also been able to tell by looking at the code printed on the hub of the discs. I can spot CMC discs rather easily. It's difficult to describe which code corresponds to which manufacturer. All I can say is, look at the code lettering of a CMC disc compared to a Prodisc disc; note the font, the spacing of the characters, and the boldness. You should see a distinct difference.
