Burned Movie to DVD+R But can't read???

Postby w auggie h on Mon Oct 13, 2003 8:06 am

I am a newbie and so far I have burned 3 movies to TDK 2x DVD-R using Nero 6.x with my LG GSA-4040B with out any problem. I can read the disk in all my players in the house. Over the weekend I bought some Memorex 4x DVD+R (On Sale) and tried to burn another movie using Nero 6.x and my LG drive. I followed the same steps as the others and had no errors burning the disk, but now I can't read the disk at all in any drive. Both CPU DVD drives and 2 DVD players in the house. What am I missing??? Do I need to perform extra steps for different media types? Where can I find more info about this??? Help. I really don't want to make any more coasters!!!

It could be the players:
They might not support +R.

How old are they? Newer ones are more likely to play +R.
Check the DVD players section at dvdrhelp.com
to see compatibility information.
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

LiteOn 52246S 52X CD-RW
LiteOn 52246S (another)
LiteOn 52327S 52X CD-RW
TDK 40X USB 2.0 CD-RW

I will look into that in more detail but why would my computer not be able to read it? The drive I burned it with, LG GSA-4040b supports +R for burning. Would it not also be able to read it?

Yes it should. It could be a software problem, some versions of Nero 6 seem to be quite buggy especially with DVD+R.
Try another version or use a different software and see if it helps.

Thanks, I will try burning with a different program. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a for a free burning app? Real basic. I have been using DVDShrink to Backup some movies and it is a straight forward burn.

I used the 4040B with 4X memorex +R's and had no problem at all.

Try using DVD-Shrink to rip the movie to your harddrive first, then use CloneDVD to burn the movie to a disk.

I have done this for 3 disks and they all work in my Apex DVD player.

I didn't realize you meant that even the burner couldn't read it.

Try burning with Stomp Record Now Max if Nero doesn't work for you with +R.
That being said, I have used both Nero 6.0.0.11 and Stomp RecordNow Max 4.5 for +R without problems.

Some (older?) players have problems with discs (in somre cases -R and in some cases +R) burned with some versions of Nero.

Try upgrading to Nero 6.0.0.19.

Also, I had problems playing DVD+R on my computer using Powerdvd 4.0. I was able to play them using Windows Media player and Powerdvd 5.0

Thanks, I will try upgrading to the latest version of Nero. I did notice there is an update available. I am also going to try to burn with a differnet software package if I have one.

What kind of Apex player do you own, may I ask? I have quite an old secret menu type AD-600A, which I cannot get to read either plus or minus R or RW discs. I have other newer set-top players which can read the disks I've burned though, but I like my Apex the best, so it's a shame it can't read my burned disks.

Well, that did it! I upgrade my Nero install to 6.0.0.19 and re-burned the same movie to the same type of 4x DVD+R Memorex media and it worked. I even burned at 4x(a first for me). So far it was able to play back on my PC and on my APEX AD-660 DVD player. Thanks for the help everyone. :D

Unfortunately I have a brand new Apex 1225 $59 at Futureshop or BestBuy in Toronto, thus I do not have to access the secret menu as the player works with all formats.

what's the benefit of the "secret menu" on the older Apex DVD players?
i was under the impression that it enables unlocking the zone, but if the newer ones are already multi zone then what's the problem with not having a secret menu?
