What DVD-rom would you choose?

My wishes are:

* readability of DVD-R +R -RW +RW (DVD-RAM i dont care) at full speed!
* Speed .. i want to rip fast
* good errorcorrection if a damaged dvd is inserted


Bonus features (not that important):

* reading of copyprotections

I researched for a long time and i still dont know which to choose. The only review I found of the Liteon 166 drive is here: http://members.fortunecity.fr/vbl117/introduction.htm
but there is no test (nero drivespeed) of dvd-r media.
I also searched for the toshiba 1712 and found out that its speed is locked when reading CSS... bad guys. But there is a hacked firmware to unlock its potential which I found here:

along with some nerodrivespeed images where you can see that there are a bit troubles reading -rw +rw at the end.

Anybody who owned both of the drives and really knows which one to pick?

I own neither drive, but I can tell you that Lite-On, makes excellent DVD-ROM drives.

I think I will go for the toshiba 1712
cause it has superior error correction.

By the way, there's a newer Toshiba SD-M1802, but it supposedly doesn't read DVD-RAM discs. And for now no hacked firmware is available...

yea bought the 1712 and first set region 2 and then flashed the nolimit firmware...

the drive is very silent for its speed and i tried a lot of media. i had trouble with only one brand: memorex dvd-r from the spindle... and it was only one media which could not be read but the old cyberdrive 8x did, very slow but read it. the other memorex i tested work fine.
BTW: never buy memorex dvd-r, its by far the worst media you can get.

dual layer ripping speed is impressive. i got 5.6gb in 10 mins on my hdd is very very ok for me. the nero cd-dvd speed graphs look a bit weird, not linear cause there are some error corrections on most writable media which force a spindown, but thats ok as long as its read properly.

overall: impressive, but only with no limit firmware!
