NEC1300 vs Pioneer 106

Postby cemjack on Wed Oct 08, 2003 6:18 am

Which is the better of these two drives? I have read that the pioneer handles more media types...but have also read that certain programs such as DVDclone have problems with pioneer drive.
Thanks.

Hello!

I recommend the Pioneer, because the media-compatibility and the writing quality is better. Or buy a LG GSA 4040, it´s a good drive, too
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

I had the same question before bying my burner... I ended up with the Pioneer A06...

Never has a single problem with it so far and with the hacked firmware it works even bether... So this is my choice, unless of course you want to stick with a burner that has many problems with media compatability... (NEC).

Good Luck!

what is the hacked firmware version you recommend/use?

Appreciate the help. I was leaning towards the pioneer, THEN I read the review of the new plextor.

Well, for the 106 there's only one hacked version.. Unless there was a new release in the last 2 days thet I'm not aware of.
It removes the rip speed limit, burns 2x on 1x media and of course makes your burner RPC1.

Well, the new Plex... Yes! That's another story... If I had the money... oh yeah... But Dvd+R is more expensive than "minus" so I wouldn't use the 8x speed... Ahhh I'm good for what I have....

I just made a similar decision. (I was also considering the Sony 510A, but ruled it out because I didn't think the 8MB buffer was worth the extra cost.)

I went with the Pioneer A06 (yesterday). So far, so good. My DVD player (XBox) seems to work equally will with +R and -R. It didn't like the +RW that I tried. (I haven't tried a -RW yet.)

BTW, the A06 has a $20 rebate through Nov 1. (It might be limited to the US though, the rebate form is titled "Pioneer DVR - A06 USPK").

There are 3 types of DVDROMs used in XBOX's. Samsung(awesome reads about anything)Philips and Thompson(reliability issues). The Samsung and Thompson both rear dvd-rws.The Philips generally doesnt read any dvdrws. They all will read cdrws but not cdr unless you were blessed with a samsung drive(rare).

I must have the Phillips. It liked both DVDRs but didn't like the one DVD-RW I tried. However, I'm now 1 for 2 on my DVD+RW attempts. I'll have to figure out what I did differently one the second one.
