Plextor 708 problems

Postby wicked1 on Wed Oct 08, 2003 10:31 pm

I have installed my Plextor 708 this evening. It was manufactured in China Sept 03.I flashed the firmware to 1.02 checked to make sure DMA is enabled and tried to burn a Verbatim DVD+RW. Fail. I was using Nero 6.0.0.19. I am going to try Roxio 6 next. I also have a complaint about PlexTools. I installed it and it doesnt like the drive. It is version 2.07.I am not too happy at the moment. The Verbatim discs are Mitsubishi Chemical. They burn fine in the Sony.Any ideas????I dont wanna blow a bunch of DVD+R's or DVD-R's till I can at least burn one RW either format successfully.

Try Nero 60011 and Nero 551042.

If you google, should be able to find a place to download. Or you can try www.filemirrors.com

Plextools doesn't come with the drive, you need a previous version before you can install it. It's available on most file sharing networks or you can try the Plextor forum on www.cdfreaks.com

I wouldn't use RW as a basis to determine how well the drive burns discs. I've always had issues with RW discs, regardless of the drive (both CD and DVD).

Try uninstalling Nero, using the Nero Clean Tool, availible here:
ftp://ftp9.nero.com/attach/General-CleanTool.zip

and then re-installing Nero 6.0.0.19 or 6.0.0.11

If you upgraded from 6.0.0.15 without using the Clean Tool first, you will of course have problems with Plus media and the PX-708A, as that was in Nero 6.0.0.15

I did download Plextools from Edonkey network. It is installed and running I just cant do any of the cool things that I thought it was supposed to do like adjust burning power for less jitter. It wont let me it is greyed out. I just opened a Maxell DVD+RW and threw in there and it appears to be working in Nero. It is at 39% right now. I havent checked who made this disc yet.

Try a +/iR disc. I also don't know if the support is there for DVDs. Try a CDR.

Sorry to hear of your problems.
Try a clean install of Nero, as suggested.
Also see if you have any other burning software that is causing conflicts, or if you have any packet writing apps running in the background etc.
You might also want to consider turning off anti-virus software while burning, assuming you aren't already doing that.

OS used: Win XP Pro SP1.

Software used:
I am using Nero 6.0.0.11 and Stomp RecordNow Max 4.5 (new Sonic engine 408) with both my PX-708A (fw 1.02) drives - no problems at all.

Media used:
Memorex 4X +R, TDK 4X +R and Verbatim (both Ricoh and MCC) 4X +R at 8X.
Memorex 4X DVD+RW.
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

Still having problems :(

Postby wicked1 on Thu Oct 09, 2003 12:20 am

It keeps having a right error right at the end of the disc.I used the clean nero tool.I dont use any packet software at all. Why wont Roxio work either though???That is what came with the drive.I am trying Maxell DVD+RW and Verbatim DVD+RW.

OS=Win Xp Pro SP1 w/ all service packs possible
Nero 6.0.0.19
Roxio 6.1.1.17
No AntiViral Software
Edit:Oh yeah the Maxell discs are Ricoh.

uninstall nero reboot
cleantool reboot
nero 6.0.0.19 reboot

thats how plextor explains to do it, most people get good results with that process.

Roxio a success kinda

Postby wicked1 on Thu Oct 09, 2003 1:34 am

I managed to successfully burn a DVD+RW (Ricoh) with Roxio 6 but at 95% or so it stopped and had a bunch of issues. Sat there trying to burn at .1 X It took about 45 mins to burn a full DVD. The other 95% went fine at 2.4X.Well its time to take the plunge and try to burn a 4x DVD+R (Ricoh TDK disk) at 8X and see if it works.

confused

Postby wicked1 on Thu Oct 09, 2003 1:51 am

I just got done burning a disk at 8x. IT WORKED! It took 8:15 for 4458 megs.I used Nero. Now why wont it burn the +RW's at 2.4X?I didnt do the reg patch to show the actual write speed. It slowed down somewhere and I think it was at the end but I dont know for sure. Buffer never dropped below 50%.

8:15 sounds right for a full DVD with no slow-down at 8x.

8:15 sounds exactly right:

I remember checking the time of a burn yesterday, right after upgrading my new drive to 1.02, just like the "old" drive.
It burned 4.35 GB (out of possible 4.37 GB - aka "4.7 GB") in 8:14.

This doesnt make any sense to me. Why can I burn the TDK +R's at 8X without a hitch but I cant burn ANY DVD-R's or any DVD+RW's?Everytime the DVD-R's are giving a track following error at ~1% and the DVD+RW's are giving a Write Error at 99%.

I was able to burn successfully on HP and Phillips DVD+RW at 2.4x speed. I just got Memorex 4x DVD+RW. I have not tested these yet. I will test these over the weekend to see if I can burn at 4x speed.

Couple of things...

1. Have you tried Plextor's tech support? Normally I wouldn't suggest this, but they are quite good.

2. Have you tried it in another computer? I know you did a clean install, but it could be a hardware issue.

3. It could be a bunk drive. Even Plextor puts out a few lemons every once and awhile.

I haven't tried any DVD-Rs with it yet.
Luckily that large majority of my blanks are DVD+Rs.

I do have some Fuji -Rs, Maxell (only one) and even KHypermedia -Rs (keeping the KHypers for a rainy day or emergency) left though.
If the drive really has problems with them, I might just wait till new firmware for -R comes out before trying to burn any.
I have enough +Rs to tide me over for the imminent future...

Well I got hold of plextor today. They told me that with dvd-r's they are really picky about what media they will burn but they will gladly exchange the drive for another if thats what I think it is.Regarding the dvd+rw issue they said that sometimes disks are bad and to try more than the couple I have tried. In other words no help whatsoever.I think I am going to RMA it anyway just to be sure thats not the problem since my pioneer 106 just arrived this evening.Like I told them it burns every Ricoh at 8X no problems.Just not any dvd-r or dvd+rw.
