DRU500A firmware/media question

Postby IndieSnob on Wed Oct 08, 2003 3:45 pm

Well, it's been a long while since I've flashed the firmware on my drive, version I have is 1.0f. I just went and bought a couple 50 spindle packs of memorex 4x -R media (that 40% off deal at compusa was too hot to pass up on), and before I open up one of them and start burning coasters and not being able to take them back should I upgrade to a newer firmware to make the burns more reliable? I've usually just been buying the cheapy 1x -R blanks from my local PC Club, and have been burning them at 2x with not one coaster. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to start backing up large amounts of data! THANKS!

So far mine has not burned any 4x - media at 4 only 2 but some of these drives have a problem with doing just that so hard to say. I have burned 4x TDK + media at 4x before.
If it's a good enough deal I suppose you'll be OK, just might not be able to burn it at full speed.

I have experienced with TDK+R 2.4x, Imation+R 2.4x,Sony+R 2,4x and RICOH+ 4x after the "20g" firmware upgrade and all went well.

I believe in advanced technology and support in "+" in general, but I see that Pioneer came with a new type DVD-Recorder w. DVD-RAM/DVD-R...(stand alone).

My experience so far has been the same. I havent been able to burn any of the 4x - media at 4x only 2x. I have burned a few TDK +R's at 4x.How did you manage to get the Sony to burn the 1x at 2x? I WISH!!!

Today my Sony finally burnt some dvd-r's at 4x.I admit its kinda picky when it comes to writing it at full speed but at least it ALWAYS burns them.
I used some BeALL 4x dvd-r's.Nice.

That has been my experience also so far. It doesn't always go as fast as the media claims to support but they always work afterwards unless I really do something wrong setting up the burn. So far it seems to burn full speed with the TDK 4x + media. I'll have to try smaller quantitys of - till I find some that it likes I guess.
