Plextor 708A, success at last on -R but what about +R?

Hi,

For the very first time, (after about 10 failures) I have succeeded, in straight-off, copying a DVD movie to a disc on my Plextor 708A.

I failed to burn to Ricoh 2.4x DVD +R, or Ricoh 4x +R, using Nero 6.0.0.15, 6.0.0.11, and 5.5.10.45.

Today I used the cheapest 4x DVD -R discs I could find on the Net, I think they are Princo, re-installed Nero 6.0.0.15, and the update patch, used the settings on Nero which I had been using for the last 10 times, and lo-and-behold, the burn went like clockwork, in 14 minutes. The DVD also plays on my Sony DVD in the front foom.

So, can any one please tell me what software I have to use on the Plextor (firmware1.01) before I can burn DVD movies on +R discs.

I used Nero 6.0.0.11 to successfully complete a burn at 8x speed on a Memorex 4x DVD+R.

What errors you getting when you're burn stops?

Nero 6.0.0.11 is working fine here for +R media. What error are you getting Nosmo King?

aviationwiz, hello, and sorry for delay in response, as I have been away for a few days.

The failure messages are:
15:06:53 Burn process started
15:25:48 Plextor DVDR PX-708A
- Write error
Plextor DVDR PX-708A
- Invalid field in command
Plextor DVDR PX-708A
- Could not perform end of Disc-at-Once
15:25:46 Burn process failed.

Once or twice I was able to rescue the disc by going back into DVD Decrypter and closing it, but mostly that too failed to produce a playable disc.

I really am looking forward to some advice which will enable me to burn +R discs on my equipment.

Just to clarify, you are ripping the DVD to your HDD and then burning it, right?

If not, you'll need to do that, If so...

The error that you are getting seems like a common error produced with the PX-708A and Nero 6.0.0.15 or Nero 5.5.10.50 and DVD+R/RW media.

You'll need to use Nero 6.0.0.11 to burn DVD+R/RW correctly. I can burn DVD+R/RW fine on my PX-708A using Nero 6.0.0.11.

If you have Nero 6.0.0.15 or 5.5.10.50 on there now, make sure you clean the registry from all mention of ahead products, or, use this tool:

I've had the same error with Nero 5.5.10.42 and 5.5.10.45. Everywhere I kept reading these versions should work oke, but they didn't. I solved the problem by installing the latest ASPI drivers from Adaptec (4.71.2).

I updated to Nero 6.0.0.19 and have not gotten the "Could not perform end of Disc-at-Once" error anymore when burning to a memorex 4x DVD+R media burned at 8x speed.

Try updating to 6.0.0.19. Let us know if your problems go away.

I can confirm that as well, I have so far burned 3 DVD+RW disks and 1 DVD+R (Memorex, RICOHJPNR01) at 8x and so far it's worked like a charm.

Hello all,

First I am sorry that I was unable to post a reply earlier. This was due to a kind of moving advert saying that I am the millionth person on this site, which obscured the boxes where I am supposed to enter my name and pasword to log in. For some reason I was unable to get rid of it, until now.

To answer your questions:

I first run DVD Decrypter on my movie and save it to my hard drive. Next I run Nero Recode to compress it to size. Then I usually stop Nero Recode and run Nero Burning ROM to burn it to my disc.

Now here is my sorry tale. At the time I fitted the Plextor 708A, I was already using Nero 6.0.0.9, so did not install the version 5.5.10.45 which came on the Plextor CD. The result was that every time I tried to burn to Ricoh +R discs I got the 'burn process failed' message.

Upgrading to Nero 6.0.0.11 and then to 6.0.0.15, made no difference. Failures every time. Then I upgraded to 6.0.0.19 and continued to fail.

By this time I was in correspondence with Plextor Europe. They had given me some advice about not upgrading to any version of Nero, but to use only that which came on their CD. I had tried it but had also failed.

Subsequently, Plextor sent me instructions on how to uninstall all the unsuitable versions and to install from their CD. Finally after failing with version 6.0.0.19, I decided to follow their procedure precisely, to the letter.
1. Uninstall Nero from the Control Panel, Add Remove Programs/Reboot.
2. Run the Nero cleaning program/Reboot.
3. Install the Nero version 5.5.10.45 program from the Plextor CD/Reboot.

And Presto! no more failures on +R discs.

Analysis of my actions leads me to conclude:
1. I stubbornly refused to revert to Nero version 5.5, when I had version 6.
2. I failed to use the Nero cleaning program before changing from one version to another.

Per the specs of the drive, it can only write at 8x speed to DVD+R media and 4x speed to DVD-R media.

Doesnt nero 6.19 have the plextor patch in it and isnt it supposed to work with the 708? I hope so as thats what I have in anticipation for the arrival for my 708.

Hey guys I just got my Plex! Okay here are some problems i ran into. Fuji 4x media is showing up as 2.4x in nero and roxio. The DVD+R that came with the drive showed up as 8x. Haven't touched my Memorex 4x yet. I'm running Nero 6.0.0.19 after the clean install (it didn't recognize the plextor without the cleaning utility).

I burned 2 dvd+r fuji which ran fine on two of my DVD players the third dvd player I need to switch the bit range to "2" opposed to "1". Does anyone know where I can make this change???? TIA
