Finally, NEC ND-2300A 8x DVD+R writer was displayed at CEATEC 2003 in Japan along with several 8x DVD+R media products from Ritek, Prodisc, CMC Magnetics, and a few others and NEC ND-5100A 4x slim-type DVD+R writer. ND-2300A has the following specifications.

8x DVD+R write
4x DVD-R write
4x DVD+RW write
2x DVD-R write
32x CD-R write
16x CD-RW write

As more manufacturers are introducing 8x-capable DVD media, we can expect more of the average optical disk drive users will switch to 8x DVD recording in the coming months.

Take a look at the drive Philips is using to demo dual layer DVD+R discs. It says HP 400i on it. Makes me think dual layer will be here sooner than we thought.

Checking around the web, the HP 400i is supposed to ship this fall and is based on Philips' new drive design. This makes me wonder if you will be able to add support for dual layer discs with a firmware update.

Thank you for the pics! Some sweet stuff coming up soon. Anyone know when that NEC drive is going to ship? I may just hold off on my new burner purchase...

Thanks for the pics on your server!
Nice! Interesting about the 8.5 GB (dual layer) DVD recordable media.

Technology has been fascinating since the personal computer revolution began...

That whole 100i fiasco actually saved me from spending too much on my first burner, and set the stage for a series of trade-ups whenever faster DVD burning came around.
I guess I should thank Ricoh/Philips/HP :) :

In early 2002 I bought a Philips 228 (1st gen 2.4X +RW (not +R) burner just like the 100i) for $499 + tax at BestBuy when it seemed that Philips support said via e-mail"yes, the drive will be able to burn +R".
However, the support answer didn't inspire confidence, and i didn't open the box until a got a firmer answer (support people via e-mail seemed not to know what they were answering to, and said something like "Nero doesn't support the media" - as opposed to the drive needing a change).

I waited a bit longer, and a day or so later it seemed more apparent
that it probably wouldn't support +R media at all, so I returned it and decided to wait for +R support.
It was a good thing I was skeptical, knew about the issues, and read the forums.

A few weeks later, CompUSA had a big anniversary sale the Panasonic
LF-311DSC 1X DVD-R/ 2X DVD-RAM combo burner for a VERY low (back then) $250 + (tax on $350) after rebate. I couldn't resist.

I eventually traded up from the used 1X (mentioned above) to a new dual 4X and then again from used (two single and one dual) 4X to two new dual 8X drives for not much money.
I will keep my 8X for quite some time.
16X may not be worth it to me, since by June of next year I will hopefully have backed up all the CD-Rs I want to DVD media , and have created enough home videos and created enough other format DVDs, that I wont be burnign as frequently; then again, who knows :)

Does that DVR-106RZ have a window on the top? It looks like it.

I'm sure the windows are just for demonstration purposes on these display units, not actual production features.

Oh man, that would be cool. We all know of cases with a window, now drives with a window. Darn.
