Anyone know anything about Nu-Tech drives?

Like what mechanism do they use?

Are they an OEM of another drive?

Are they any good?

I'm not really sure. At first I thought they might be based on one of BenQ's drives because it listed Seamless Link as a feature, but the specs aren't the same.

NU/QSI are supposed to use Philips semiconductors "solution kit" for the new DVD writers. I think QSI are quite big in making OEM notebook drives but they haven't made any half-height drives previously or sold any drives as retail.

I'm also really interested in this drive. As soon as anyone sees a review or other info, please post it. I would specifically like to know if Quanta is going to enable bitsetting in their firmware.

It states:
Application discs
- Read form DVD-ROM(DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD-10, DVD-18),
Multi-Border DVD-R/DVD-RW, Multi-Session DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM

This sounds like a terrific drive on paper anyway.Ram support is nice.I emailed them asking if any 4X media has been successfully written at 8X similar to the Plextors.Havent got a reply yet.

I sent them an e-mail a couple of days ago about bitsetting support, but have not yet received a reply. Based on the address, I think the e-mails may be going to Quanta in Taiwan.

I also called their office in California and asked their "tech" about bitsetting. I don't think he really understood what I was trying to ask, and I didn't get a clear answer.

The question about 4x media at 8x speed is a good one. Maybe the tech in California could answer that question.

just bumped the price $10 to $149.99....

Dont thinkit is a BenQ drive they have a 8X +R 4x+RW out now with totaly different specs....Philips is coming out with a 8X+R 4X+RW with the same specs as the Nu Tech DDW-081 in a month or so....so either NU Teech is making the drives for Philips or Philips is making them for NU-Tech Or maybe they are working on it together?....Looks Like lots of competition coming down the pike pretty soon...Now if we could just get some 4X+RW media to use in them...now that would be cool...

I know BenQ was using Philips' "Nexperia" DVD+R/+RW system (essentially a chipset) for their 8x DVD writer. Supposedly Nu Tech is doing the same.

VEFF is right Philips & Benq are makeing drives together.
The 8x model is the first own design. The 4x model was still based on a Ricoh design however I think some were allready manufactured by philips/benq. The Philips OEM should be out there. Still don't know a companny that's usseing it.

That would be very nice!

I just bought more 4X Memorex +R media for exactly $1 a disc + tax, which I believe only the Plextor can do at 8X for now.
I can always return them in 29 days if 8X media comes out.

Nu tech told me on the phone that they are still working on the dvd- support and that it should be doable with a firmware upgrade.they didnt say whether it was 8x or 4x but assured me many times it was a futureproof design(havent heard that b4)

That is great to hear!

One thing to keep in mind is that 8X media isn't available yet and its price at launch is bound to be relatively high, even if only for a relatively short amount of time:
If the NuTech drive can't burn 4X at 8X, buyers will have to wait for 8X +R media to become available to burn at 8X, and hope that when 8X media first comes out it isn't too pricey compared to 4X DVD+R media prices at the time.
4X +R prices have been hovering at about $1 a disc when sales come around for the past several months.

Yes, but are they going to give you this feature for free or are you going to have to buy a new drive? I'm betting the later, since you didn't pay your share of the licensing fees.

I wonder if these drives are going to need firmware updates before they will be able to write to 8x DVD+R media. It's kinda hard to add that support without having any media to test. :roll:

MCC & Ricoh have allready samples for testing ready.
If I am right Plextor 708 has both strategy's allready implemented.
The main point was no manufacturer could guarantee that the 8x media would be there at the same time as the drive.
For TY I don't know.
For 8x DVD-R Ritek,MCC (and I think Pioneer & Maxell) have some technology samples ready for at least a month.
