Programmer's question: How to detect DVD+R/W support?

Postby vio_man on Sat Oct 04, 2003 8:18 pm

I would like to ask if someone can explain me how to detect if a DVD drive supports DVD+R/W reading/writing (using C++).

Thank you.

Go to www.t10.org/drafts.htm and download the MMC documents (versions 1, 2, 3 and 4) and read the MMC command set. In particular, check the GET CONFIGURATION command (46h) and DVD+RW feature (002Ah).

cfitz, is there ANYTHING you can't find? :D

EDIT: Doom9.org has a programming forum; also, since all most all Linux software has source code, you may want to take a look at some of the Linux burning programs; they (mostly) use the SCSI (or SCSI emulation) for burning, so the commands should be the same.

I don't think the phpBB software will accept a post long enough to list all the stuff I don't know and can't find. Ian would have to buy a new server with a multi-terrabyte storage array.

In this case, I just happened to have looked at those documents before, so I knew they exist and have lots of (rather detailed low-level) information in them.

Thanks for the kind words, aviationwiz, but I'm just a generalist, so my knowledge isn't very deep. And I think Inertia does the best job at providing thoughtful, in-depth answers to questions here.

As for long answers, you're right. I do tend to be too wordy in my posts.
