New Sharp 16x DVD Burner?!?!?!?!

I was surfing the web, as usual, and found this at cdr-info... Don't know if it's true but just to let you know... they're out there!!!!


Sharp announced a new series of IC's, allowing 16x DVD recording. The first samples of the "GA301TXW1MZ" will be available in Japan by the middle of November, at a price of 200 Yen. Mass production is planned by December 26, and the estimated product volume will be 5,000 per month.
The new IC will be formalized under the OPIC (Optical IC) trademark, already registered by Sharp. It offers 16x maximum DVD recording speed for all DVD formats (DVD+R/+RW/-R/-RW), while is also capable of 60x maximum writing for CD-R/RW and 16x DVD-ROM reading. Note that according to the manufacturer of each DVD writer, those specifications can be limited.

That is just the electronics chip, though. You still need the laser, optics, servos, media, etc. to actually make a working drive system. So, don't take this announcement to mean 16x drives are right around the corner.

It looks like the June 2004 date for 16X DVD burners I had read about may well hold up, especially since Samsung has announced a burner will be out in July, according to today's cdrlabs news section.

I've been following the recent posts about these new high speed burners and what I've gathered is that most are having problems with them. If it isn't one thing is another. I was waiting for the new 8x by other companies to be released, but with all the problems out there I'm going for a 4x and will wait until all the bugs are removed from the future 8x. About the 16x, well, just how fast and how soon will they too become obsolete. Speed is great, but its the quality not the quantity that counts.

Well let me appologise for the post but I thought i was giving a new contribution to all of you. I know that they were talking abou the Chip and there are other issues like dvd standards, medias...... to solve first...

But this is a begining... If the chip was already anounced that would mean that optical heds, lasers,..., are probably on the way if not finished already. But that's just me thinking of course... I also read somewhere that July 2004 would be the date for the first release on 16x burner (optimistical view for some), like VEFF has stated.

thanks for the info.

However, I must add that in recording the servo and laser parts are much more critical than the basic IC.

IC is just control electronics, but laser and servo are inherently analog/mechanical parts that must be manufactured to very tight tolerance in DVD recording, in order to be able to pull off a high speed recording.

I'm quite confident will see some sort of 16x dvd recording in the future, but I'm not all too optimistic it will be by Q2-Q3/2004.

After all, even the 8x results currently leave a lot to be desired qualitywise and the recording isn't even true 8X in some respects (Z-CLV).
