avi on web plays w/ Quicktime, but when saved plays w/ WMP?

This seems strange and maybe someone can help me:

When I click on an avi file link on a website, it starts to play with Quicktime.
However, Quicktime doesn't play some of them.

I thought fine. Let me change the default "opens with" for avi files to Windows Media Player.
I checked in Windows Explorer, and avi files are ALREADY set up to open with Windows Media Player.

I noticed that when I save them to my had drive, they play with Windows Media Player automatically, but from the web site they play with Quicktime, which doesn't play some of them...

I tried to remove Quicktime, but IE still wanted to pick Quicktime, or do nothing when clicking on an avi file on web sites, even though WMP is installed.

I then decided to perform a 'System Restore' to just before Quicktime was uninstalled.
The restore said it was successful. However, it didn't really work, since Quicktime is still missing; no big deal I can reinstall it.

I just want IE to open the avi files with Windows Media Player...

Why is Internet Explorer (I have IE 6 by the way) operating differently from Windows Explorer for avi file playback?
Any suggestions on how to fix/change this?

Not to worry, I found out that they are 'Quicktime control objects' (whatever that means exactly), which must be why only Quicktime will play them on the web.
Once saved to the hard drive, they are apparently treated as "regular"
avi files...

You can get QuickTime to stop playing AVIs and other non-QuickTime file formats in your browser by following these steps.

Go to the QuickTime object in your control panel, select "Browser Plugin" from the drop-down list, click "MIME Settings", and de-select the file types which you don't want QuickTime to play in your browser. If I remember correctly, this should allow WMP to play the files again.

I did actually find the MIME settings the other day, before seeing your reply.

The problem is that the way these clips were presented on the web, they could ONLY be played by Quicktime, because it was a special format.

When I save them to the hard drive and open them, WMP plays them, as I mentioned it was in my post.
There was something special about them when they are "run" directly on the web site link.

Yes, I've had the same problem (files play with WMP once saved to the HDD, but they play with QuickTime in IE or AvantBrowser), but on my computers, changing the MIME settings made WMP play the files, even in IE or AvantBrowser.
