New drive 52X, running at 24x because of HD...

Well I realized that my Phillips 40x burner was beyond repair so I went and got a TDK 52x burner. I decided to run it through all the tests and was amazed when the nero drive tests started well and about half way through went almost straight down to below the starting speed. So i decided to do an actual burn to see how acurate the test was. I set nero 6 to do a drive speed test at the beginning of the burn and it told me that the fastest burn coming from my D: drive (My music drive) is 24x.
what type of hard drive speed do I need to get 52x burning.

Your hard drive is surely fast enough. The drive might be limiting the speed due to the type of media that you're using.

I disagree, although it is completely possible it *IS* the media, it is much more likely that DMA is not enabled for the drive. Try taking a look at your device manager for your ATAPI/IDE ATA devices (in Win2000 or WinXP) or your HDD properties (in Win98 or WinME) and see if your drive is set to DMA or PIO. You want it to be DMA.

Of course, I've been in situations where my computer was running completely barebones, fresh install of windows, DMA enabled, and everything set EXACTLY as it should be, and I've STILL had Nero screw up and say my HDD was too slow and mess up my burns, or have BurnProof kick in. So sometimes I think it is just Nero's fault... although Nero 6 has yet to do this to me

Well actually DMA is turned on on all drives and I am using TDK 52x media in a TDK 52x burner. I am trying to figure it out myself. Maybe I should ditch my drive and get a new one but I really don't want to spend the money if I don't have to.

Was wondering if you have tried doing a true burn and see how long the burn takes?

I believe the TDK you have is really a Liteon drive.

Despite using TDK 52X media in a TDK 52X drive, I still recommend trying some other media by another manufacturer. That will give a more definitive answer as to whether or not the issue is with the blank media. You don't need to hunt for 52X media necessarily, 48X or 40X discs should be fine for this experiment.
