Verbatim DLP CD-RW/MC 80min 24x

Postby XIII on Wed Sep 17, 2003 3:12 pm

Hi,

Would have liked to report Verbatim DLP CD-RW/MC 80min 24X as succesful on my LiteOn LTR52327S (QS09), but unfortunately I always get 0.11% unreadable - even after fully erasing my two discs several times :( And no, not at the end of the (burned part) of the disc...

It is typical of older TY packaging.

How does the new TY packaging look like?
Can anyone here upload or send me a photo of other TY spindles?

The newer ones look like this (without and without the wrapper):

This thread has a number of pictures and hints to help you indentify manufacturers by the packaging:

Not at the current disc, so:

Code: Select all
........................Verbatim DLP CD-RW/MC 80min 24X.........24X

Fuji 52x (Fuji)

Postby MediumRare on Sat Sep 20, 2003 6:16 pm

Code: Select all
LiteOn LTR 48246S
Firmware SS0B...........Fujifilm/Fuji 80min 52X.................48X

I finally found individual Fuji's "Made in Germany" and bought one for this test. 8) This is made by Fuji and is quite good (the drive doesn't do more than 48x). ATIP from SmartBurn 3.1.1:
Code: Select all
        Drive Type = CD-RW
         Disc Type = CDR (B-)
          Material = Phthalocyanine
           Lead In = 97:26:45
          Lead Out = 79:59:73
  Nominal Capacity = 702.83MB (79m 59s 73f/LBA:359848)
Manufacturer Maybe = FUJI Photo Film Co., Ltd.
Smart-Burn Speed Limit = Wrt(48X),Rd(48X)

CD-Speed: all green, except the very last sector- I inadvertently burned it with TAO. KProbe: C1 max/ave: 15/0.25 for a data disk. The peak value and more than half the C1 errors were in the last 5 min. of the disk.

I have to downgrade the verdict for the Verbatim DataLife (CMC) disks (see also verbatim cdr/rw vary in quality). I recently burned 2 of these at 32x and 40x (to get rid of them- I don't use them for anything important) and found countless errors. If this is an aging problem for the unburnt media (5 months, sealed in jewel cases), it doesn't augure well for them. Next burns will be at 24x.

Thanks jedimc, XIII, and MediumRare.

MediumRare: Let me know how the Verbatim DataLife discs turn out at 24X. If there are still errors, you may have to downgrade to 16X, 12X, 8X, or whatever works successfully. Then again, no speed may be 100% successful!

Thanks for the new results, XIII, and the list was indeed updated before with your Verbatim result. To be consistent with previous results with these discs, I recorded it as:

........................Verbatim Super Azo/MC 80min 24X.........24X

Hm. I do not understand that. These are CD-RW's (ReWritable!) so I think my suggestion was in line with the 74min CD-RW's already presented on page 1. With your notation, I would easily confuse them with the CD-R's (Recordable!) listed on page 1.

No intention to offend you, just a bit confused. Can you enlighten me?

Ah! My mistake entirely! I totally overlookd the CD-RW. :) Just to confirm, they are 80 minute Ultra Speed (24X) CD-RW's, not 74 minute?

OK I guess 24x is the new verdict on the DL-40s, at least until the next disaster. Here is a short summary of the 7 disks I've burned, all (re)scanned wih KProbe 1.1.23 in the last couple of days:
Code: Select all
No.  Speed  Type       C1           C2       Scan
                    max  mean    max  mean   Speed

1    48x    Audio   241  21.8    366  0.77   max (32)
2    40x    Audio    12   1.095   -    -     max
3    48x    Audio    89  17.9      1          32
4    40x    Audio    13   1.204   -    -     max
5    32x    Audio   203  20.8    246  2.49   max
6    40x    Audio   204  29.5    197  8.1    max (32)
7    24x    Data     14   1.34    -    -     max

On No. 1 and No. 6, Kprobe slowed to 32x after numerous seek errors. I was unble to complete a scan of No. 3 at speeds > 32x because of seek errors (C1 counts > 1000) !!!
No. 6 was burned with a Sony CRX220E1 (firmware 6YS1), all others with LTR 48246S, firmware SS0B.
I'm glad I only have 3 left. Good riddance. I hate CMCs.

700MB = 80min

They are 700MB (listed both on the front cover and the disc itself), so 80min...

Should I scan the front cover?

Thank you for your time,

Platinum 52x just broke...

Postby XIII on Sat Sep 27, 2003 4:26 am

The Platinum 52x I have tested seems to be incompatible with the 2CD box I put it in. When I tried to get it out of the box for the first time it just broke in 2 pieces! :x

Unfortunately I bought just one disc for experimenting, so I do not know whether this is a coincedence or the quality is really not that good...

No need to scan the front cover, I believe you. Thanks for the new results. :)

And thank you for the fixed results, MediumRare. :)

Hey TheWizard, when's the DVD Media Compatability thread going to be started? and what will the requirements be? I should have a nice LiteON 166S for some K-Probe scans sometime next week!
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

Before you get too excited about doing error scans in the 166S, you should read THIS thread. Using a ROM drive for scanning is usefull only for comparing different burns with the same burner and media.

Sorry rdgrimes, but those tests are invalid. Comments (also posted at cdfreaks):

Those tests are not accurate. You are using speed "Max", when the Max speed for this drives is completely different.

The Max speed in the LDW-401S is 12x.

The Max speed in the LTD-166S however is 16x.

Both drives will report very different results because of the different speeds. You need to test them both at 8x to get accurate results, and even then, we will still not know for sure which one is more accurate.

Ahh, hrmm, well, I don't know if I have the time or motivation for compiling such a list right now. Furthermore, the testing medium should be something that is universal, therefore as good as K-Probe is, I would be against it in terms of determining DVD-/+R compatibility. To be frank, I don't own a DVD burner, thus I am not up to speed on all the drives, media types, scanning programs, etc. Is there even a universal DVD scanning tool that provides accurate results or are such programs still in beta format (for lack of a better term)?

hehehe, how about Nero CD/DVD speed? I haven't used it for anything other then CDs yet, so I don't know how it handles DVDs, but it seems like the reasonable choice right?

Is it a reasonable choice for accurate error reporting with DVD's? That's the real question. I've only used it for CD's as well, therefore I am in the dark as much as you are in reference to DVD's.

We're in the dark because we don't have DVD-Writers

Maybe I'll have to fix this in a month or too  ...well, for me at least, you'll have to buy your own :P
