Charter Pipeline Changes

Just a quick FYI for those that live in WI and have Charter Pipeline. You probably got something in the mail last week that they bumped up your download speed to 2.0Mbps. This is a great deal if you were paying for one of their el-cheapo plans. They say there is no catch, but what they don't tell you is that they chopped your upload speed from 192k to 128k in the process. Even then, a lot of people are seeing speeds of a lot less.

Anyway, the word over at BroadBand Reports (http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/charter) is that that new plans are on the way. You can get faster upload speeds, but you're going to have to pay for them.

Time to get DSL I guess.. :roll:

haha. ha. haha. My $30/mo Charter Pipeline went from 512 to 768 at the end of August. We don't even have a 2.0 MBit plan, the highest is 1.5 MBit ($60/mo).

Yeah, sad thing is I'm now paying twice as much as the guy with the "budget plan" and getting the same service.

Cray's nice enough to pay for my 2nd-to-the-cheapest service, so I guess I can't complain either way. I'm in range of SBC DSL, but free is free.

And I'll be damned... look what I got from Charter's CS crew:

I do see that speed upgrade to 2.0 Mbps will go into effect as of today (9/22/03) in your area.

Well it's official... with my old-school COM21 modem I got 233 KB/s from www.fileshack.com 's Chicago server. Yay!

Hmmm. Comcast sent me something awhile back saying that they were going to test out a 2MB flow with a bunch of customers for free. Gonna dig for that mail...

Thank goodness for the cable internet provider in my area then!
I get above 500 KBps (4 Mbps!) on many an occasion when downloading, for a lot less than equivalent DSL service.
I think I got almost a megabyte a second recently (8 Mbps/sec).

Who is your provider, VEFF? Cablevision's Optimum Online, RCN, or another? I know both are wicked fast up AND down.

Optimum Online.
I hardly ever upload myself, but d/l speeds are wicked fast, to put it in your terms.
I think it used to be even faster, but more and more people are switching to cable of course.

Yup, I've heard that some Optimum Online customers are exploiting their high bandwidth allowances, thus Cablevision has had to put a cap on their service. That could be one reason for slightly slower speeds. In fact, I don't think it's the customers who are exploiting, but rather hackers seek out OOL connections, hack the customer's computer, and serve files on it while the customer is totally unaware.

It could indeed be hackers.
I am sure there are many people out there without firewalls and
anti-virus software.
