The New, Kick-butt Pentium 4!

Anyone seen this yet? Intels got a new "gaming" Pentium 4 coming in a few months:
The Pentium 4 Extreme Edition; 3.2GHz, 2MG additional cache.

That makes for 2.5MG's of total cache. 3.2 GHz. 800MHz FSB. Hyperthreading. Please excuse me while I wipe the drool off the keyboard...

Not sure I wanna know how much this thing is going to cost, but still...it's gonna be
FAST! It'll sure smoke my super-slow 1.7GHz P4 with it's 256KB cache...

So, what's everyone think? Marketing ploy? Actually gonna help? Intel starting to worry about the AMD64 (speaking of which, it'll be interesting to see how that thing performs)?
(My vote: All of the above).

Plus they're making a dual-CPU Xeon (two CPUs on the SAME piece of silcon), meaning Windoze will see 4 cpu's thanks to hyperthreading. Can't wait for THAT to go mainsteam!

Things are about to get interesting in the processor world again! Yeah, baby!

I believe they are ~$750 per 1000. Typical pricing for the newest high end chip when they come out.

Wow, that sounds like a nice processor!

I'm sure that my 1.2GHz Athlon Thunderbird seems pretty slow compared to this new P4.

Hi there dudes.
I think Intel charges premium for their processors and deliver the punch allright.I have been using Intel processors,budget and performance,both without any problems and my trust in Intel grows day by day.
IMO this new baby from Intel will simply blast any competition away.

Microsoft Word? Umm, don't you mean OpenOffice Writer?

Seeing how the current P4 3.2GHz is $635 or so, and the high-end Xeons with > 1MG cache are ungodly expsensive, I am very much hoping this thing is in the $750 range (about what the 3.2GHz was when it was released) and not >$1000. Of course, it may very well be $750 or less thanks to the AMD64. I won't be upgrading until just before Doom 3 comes out, but here's hoping it'll be within my price range when it does come out!

Speaking of OpenOffice, I gotta go download that thing agian, since my Windows version won't exactly do me any good anymore

Thanks, I'll stick with my 100 buck AMD cpu's a bit longer, jees guess they think we're all just made of money. If it wasn't for AMD they would probably be double that.

Yeah, Intel always charges an arm and a leg for the "latest and greatest". Not that AMD doesn't charge alot for things like the XP 3200+ (well, they did...not sure about now).

AMD is great in the mid/low range segment, though. For the money, you can't beat a XP 2500+ (~$85). That's the cost of a Celeron running at 2.4GHz! But the performance of the P4 is something I'm not about to give up-I've used both, side-by-side, and for what I do at least, the P4 is faster. The 800Mhz FSB+Hyperthreading just makes it even faster.

I am not someone who only uses Intel CPU's; my last PC was a Thunderbird 1GHz. I have a very simple policy when buying CPUs:
GET THE FASTEST.

I'd rather have a 2.4GHz, 800MHz FSB P4 (w/Hyperthreading!) than *ANY* Athlon...for now, anyway....

I agree with that; I try to get the fastest CPU that I can afford.

I'm currently running an AMD Athlon 1.2GHz (it was fast in 2001!), but I'm guessing that my next PC will be an Intel-based system.

Yeah, Intel r0x0rs and all that, but IMO AMD still offer the best price-performance ratio.

Price/Performance is allright,but IMO if you want pure performance then go for a Intel based system.My experience also says that you get a decent second sales money for a Intel based system than an AMD.AMD is/may be good.But for pure performance for the filthy rich there is no other option than Intel based systems.
