Every manufacturer makes good and bad printers depending on price and like that. I have a HP 990. It's FAST, automaticly does both sides, and the photo quality on any paper is very good. There are all kinds of things to look for, will it cost 100 bucks for ink when it runs out, does it burn ink real fast, do the print heads hold up well and can they be user replaced when bad, are you doing regular printing tasks or do you need perfect photo prints mainly. I chose the HP becuase it did everything very well and it is built like a tank. Ohter printers can do photos a bit better and like that but many can't sit there and just print reliably day after day, plus be able to print after sitting for weeks without problems.
The newer HP printers will do photos even better with more ink colors but the cartridges are smaller now so they dont last as long and they are still pretty spendy.
Hit some of the big testing sites and forums and news groups and see what real people are saying about whatever printer your thinking about before you spend your money.
I spent a lot on my HP but it has never let me down and I'm still happy several years later.
