KProbe Help!

Hi

I just d/l KProbe 1.1.23. When I try to scan a CDR for C1/C2, my computer freezes. I then need to restart the computer.

Can anyone help? I have a LiteOn 48X24X48X on Windows XP Pro.

Make sure that you have ASPI installed. You can check this by using the Nero InfoTool (in the Nero Toolkit or available from Erik Deppe: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=download.html). The update version of KProbe does not include ASPI.

You can install Adaptec's ASPI v.4.60 using ForceASPI. Here's some information cribbed from another post:

get ForceASPI 1.7
it installs Adaptec's ASPI 4.60 (1021) without any requirement of having an Adaptec product installed.

Adaptec ASPI 4.7X is bad.

There's no reason to use it over 4.60

I still use ASPI 4.60 because 4.7x has caused problems on my computers.

Do you use usb2/firewire at all? 4.7 works fine for me on a non usb2/firewire system but exhibits strange behavior on a system with a firewire card installed.

Okay, can anyone explain ASPI to me and why I need it?

ASPI allows certain programs to communicate with your optical drives. KProbe is one such program that needs ASPI, but some CD-recording programs need it, too.

On my Win98 computers, ASPI 4.7x made it so that certain programs couldn't see my optical drives at all! 4.60 works fine, though, so I stick with 4.60.

Edit: Matt, I don't have any USB 2 or Firewire ports on any of my computers. Just USB 1.1.

Another Edit: I have also found that KProbe seems to freeze like this when I attempt to scan a disc in an optical drive that is attached to a PCI IDE controller (i.e. not the IDE controller integrated into the motherboard).

Alright...i've done some reading and found that Ahead have their own APSI driver (wnaspi32.dll).
I found it in my Nero folder.

I should install it in the %windir%\System32 folder?

Actually, Ahead's ASPI driver is only used by Nero, as far as I know. It should already be installed if you're using Nero, and you don't need it if you don't use Nero.

Those results for the Verbatim and LG are quite good!

The results for the Pioneer (CMC) aren't wonderful, but they're not terrible, either. Not all CMC are that bad, either; I've gotten some fairly good results with some CMC media.
