I know the burner can tell the software what to set the speed to, based on the firmware table; for example the Plextor lets you burn at 8X on 4X media with Nero and Stomp, among others.
I assume that if a given disc isn't in the firmware's media table/list, then the software probably defaults to the discs's rated speed, as set by the manufacturer.
In other words, I think the DRU-500A is limiting the burn speed for that particular media, to its rated speed.
I am pretty sure that Nero is not going to limit the burn speed, unless
the burner doesn't pass Nero any instructions on what speed to default to.
This is why Nero and Stomp will allow you to successfully burn some brands of 4X +R media at 8X. The burner is telling Nero what to set the maximum speed to.
I am not an expert, and these are just my own observations and assumptions.
