Sony Vs Plextor writer

Postby Stelios on Thu Sep 11, 2003 11:18 am

Hi

I was set to buy the Sony DRU-510A DVD writer until I saw the Plextor PX-708A.
Now a have a dilemma which one to get. I like the 40xCD-R capability of the Plextor (as I burn a lot of CD-R disks). Both of them have 4xDVD-R and the Plextor one has 8xDVD+R (although this is not an issue for me as I will be using DVD-R media).
Any of you guys have any experience with the Plextor PX-708A model?

Read all the threads that cfitz linked to, but also consider that we have not seen KProbe Graphs of DVD's burned on the DRU-510A. Therefore, we have no idea how good the quality of the burns are. I have posted many KProbe Graphs of various media burned on the PX-708A.

And, in the future, if you ever burn DVD+R, you have the 8x capability right there in your drive, on the Sony, you can only burn at 4x.

Have both, Sony burns fine, Plex burns fine.

I think the current issues we're seeing will be resolved with a firmware update from Plex and a software update with Nero. Growing pains always happen when a drive with different specs hits the market.

I picked up a 708A because like you, I liked the CD burning speeds (8X +R isn't too shabby either). There are those that will tell you not to burn CDs with your DVD burner because you might "burn it out". My rebuttal is pretty simple, there's a warranty in place if it dies and given the QA testing that goes into a drive... unless you're operating a illegal duplication business, the chances of you wearing out a drive are pretty slim.

I'm not sure how the Plex will do backing up copy protected CDs... that might be the only need to get a CD burner.

Hi aviationwiz

Where in South Africa do you come from. I used to live in Joburg (Glenhazel) Lovely place. Missing it a lot.
Thanks for the info on the burners.
