Have both, Sony burns fine, Plex burns fine.
I think the current issues we're seeing will be resolved with a firmware update from Plex and a software update with Nero. Growing pains always happen when a drive with different specs hits the market.
I picked up a 708A because like you, I liked the CD burning speeds (8X +R isn't too shabby either). There are those that will tell you not to burn CDs with your DVD burner because you might "burn it out". My rebuttal is pretty simple, there's a warranty in place if it dies and given the QA testing that goes into a drive... unless you're operating a illegal duplication business, the chances of you wearing out a drive are pretty slim.
I'm not sure how the Plex will do backing up copy protected CDs... that might be the only need to get a CD burner.
