Nero 6 stupidly writes DVD in unreadable format!

Postby lgmayka on Mon Sep 08, 2003 9:12 pm

I was unable to back up a >4GB file onto a DVD-R or DVD+R today, using Nero 6.0.0.11 OEM. I finally figured out that Nero *STUPIDLY* writes the DVD with a Joliet filesystem, which does not support such large files. Consequently, the file cannot be read back in, which shows itself as a data verification failure. I see no way to convince Nero to write a UDF filesystem. (In fact, by the way, I see no way to convince Nero 6.0.0.11 OEM to bring up the old Nero Burning ROM program. Apparently that is now a retail-only feature.)

B's Recorder Gold 5.32 is only a little better: It gives an error message as soon as such a large file is chosen.

When I had Easy CD Creator 5.3.5 Basic, it was smart enough to notice the file's size and automatically write a UDF filesystem instead. Unfortunately, in the process of managing burn-software conflicts I uninstalled Easy CD Creator.

It is surprising that many people scorn Easy CD Creator, when it does the sensible thing whereas Nero's behavior is totally unreasonable.

The latest version, 6.0.0.15, apparently fixed this nasty bug. When choosing a >4GB file to burn, Nero 6.0.0.15 correctly notices that the file cannot be written to an ISO (CDFS) filesystem, and offers to write it to a UDF filesystem instead.

Note that Nero 6.0.0.15 OEM Suite still provides no way, as far as I can see, to manually choose to write UDF instead of ISO.
