Just got my Optorite DD0203 from accupc.com

What about media? Did the tests that created this list occure with Media listed on the Optorite site as DVD-R they reccomend? Or Just any media.

I have not tried DVD-R as in general I consider it an inferior standard to +RW, but I have not had any problems with media listed on thier site.

I have had probems with brand X media.

It is clear they were more focused at release on DVD+ media. So I think thier list becomes more important.

Do we know if people have issues with DVD-R from other Non-pioneer drives not reading on the Pioneer?

These are all the questions that need to be ansered to come to any quality conclusion.

If you found that this problem continues with Optorite listed media, then your assumption it is more than a Firmware issue might be valid.

I did see an Optorite tech post on another thread that they would love any media feedback. So I hope you will email your findings so they can take a shot at fixing it.

Optorite's website currently lists 3 recommended -R media: Fujifilm 2X, Maxell 2X, and Apple 4X. In the US, Fujifilm 2X -R discs are made by either RitekG03 or Taiyo Yuden, and both Maxell and Apple discs are made by Maxell (ID:MXL). If you read the previous page, you would notice that firehawk12 mentioned that he burned Maxell, Ritek, and TY discs and none could be read on other drives. Like I said previously, so far only EPO and Toshiba DVD-ROM drives seem to be able to read the -R discs burned by the DD0203, regardless of the manufacturers of the media. Whether this issue could be solved by Optorite/Sanyo is up to them to find out.

I can certainly understand why so many people are angry at Optorite even though the firmwares are actually developed by Sanyo, not by Optorite. The retail markets are tough and competitive, and if Optorite isn't well prepared, it may lose big after the 2.17 debacle. Earlier I was thinking of replacing my Lite-On DVD-ROM drive, but now I am seriously thinking of replacing my DD0203 with either a Pioneer or NEC burner.

BTW, someone at the Afterdawn forum posted that he couldn't flash his drive from 2.17 back to 2.16, but was able to flash back to 2.15. So if you are stuck with 2.17 and want out, try 2.15 or other earlier versions. Just remember, YMMV.

FINALLY!!! This is what I kept saying way back when! DVD-R is not all there yet. (Listen Optorite!!!!)

I will repeat this again.

1. Make an iso of an original DVD with DVDdecryptor.
2. Burn the iso to DVD-R.
3. Take the newly made DVD-R and read that to an iso file with DVDdecryptor.

You will get a read error at the end of the disc.

Haven't bought one yet but was wondering if HD burn was an option while burning svcd's or vcd's in Nero? If so, do the regular software dvd players like WinDVD recognize the HD burned discs?

The reason being if the answer is yes to these questions then there's an outside chance that if you drop this drive into a standalone player like an Apex that it might play HD burnt svcd's or vcd's.

Anyone know what this could mean, is my burner broken? I have tried with all different types of discs using Alcohol 120 and Nero to try and burn the files but it doesn't seem to matter. I tried using different types of disc from Verbatim, Fuji, Maxell, Sony, etc. I've tried using Riteks, CMC, Taiyo Yuden, etc. Previously the burner was able to burn most CD's. I've also tried reinstalling the burning software but that didn't help either. I'm not sure if it could be the firmware that causes all these problems. I'm using the latest firmware 2.16. Any idea's? Thank you all

For anybody who did a bad flash:

If you remember, I was one of the first who updated to 2.17. While it was working, I decided I would rather have an appropriate for my drive firmware and tried to reflash 2.16. It failed mid-flash and restarted my PC. The drive wouldn't do anything afterwards. I then was able to reflash using the DOS program. If you haven't already, make a DOS startup disk (does not need to have CD-ROM support!) and make another disk with the dos utility and the bios. It worked like a charm for me.

That's very interesting information. When you say your drive wouldn't do anything, do you mean it was not recognized by PC BIOS? Did eject button work? My drive is completely dead, not even recognized by BIOS. DOS flash program is the first thing I've tried back then, unfortunately it doesn't see the drive either....

The Pioneer 120 has been listed as a working drive for DVD-r in this thread.

Though as much as I a happy with mine, people who favor and want to focus on DVD dash media are having much more problems then those using DVD plus.

I need some immediate help, I just recieved my optorite 2203, I tried burning several media with the recommended media by the posters here using Verbatim Datalife DVD-R from officedepot (P1tom how did you get them to work??) and LD01. Both of these were burned using DVDSHRINK 3.0 and then I burned them with NERO 6.0.15 by dragging all those files into video.

Both of these discs work fine in my PS2 and Nak standalone player BUT the main problem is that they dont seem to run on either my pc DVD rom player or Optorite player. Thats mymain concern since i run all my movies on my computer since I have a pretty nice setup. I heard from some users that used these media before and havent experienced any problems. I am using firmware 2.16 and playing with POWERDVD 4.0, some movies would get me to the menu screen and wouldnt jump when you make the selections. I need some tips on HOW to GET IT TO READ ON MY PC. please help me out, thanks.

jabroney12..havent you read the forum? many people have the same problem that you do, and there is no fix yet.
OPTORITE BURNED -R IS THE PROBLEM
ONLY FEW PC DVDrom drives are able to play -R media burned by optorite. (mostly are new pcdvd roms, like pioneer120, but.. pioneer 119 cant read the dvd -R )

xbox, playstation2, home dvd cinema players are able to read the -R dvds that optorite burns. THE PROBLEM IS WITH PC DVDROM PLAYERS, those dont even detect the dvd inserted.

they were able to read the dvd-r because some brands and models of pc dvdrom drives are able to read the -R burned media.

it is not a matter of dvd-r brand
it is a matter or PC DVD_ROM PLAYER BRAND AND MODEL.

can ppl of this optorite be more constructive rather than making sweeping statements. now we r facing an issue. we r solving it together. so thats why we need to collate our info and share our info.

so far i hav seen ppl listing DVDROMS which cant read dvd-r produced. we need more inputs. By judging Pioneer and Liteon DVDROMs not able to read those dvd-r thus condemn Optorite is not just.

we need more info on diff type of dvdroms besides pioneer n liteon

I bought this drive one month ago. I immediately flashed to 2.16 (was 2.09). At first, I couldn't burn any DVD without getting read errors on DVD-roms readers. Even the Taiyo Yuden supplied with the burner gave errors. I couldn't burn any Princo 4x at that speed : I made 3 coasters. I managed to burn these Princo at 2x but get again the same read errors...
So, I wondered if my drive was bad from the start. On the same cable I had a LG 48x24x48x CRDW-DVD-combo on the master. I switched the two drives to put the Optorite in master position, reflashed to 2.16 ... and bingo !! no more errors, no more coasters, I can now write even the Princo DVD-R at 4x without any errors (20 burned at that speed). I got some memorex DVD+R (made by Ricoh) and they burn very well at 4X. No read errors, all is perfect now.
Conclusion : try to put the optorite in master position on the cable, without any other drive if you have problems. Maybe it does matter.

I forgot to say that I also upgraded my version of Nero (express 5.5). So maybe it was my version (5.5.10.32 instead of 5.5.10.45 I believe) that was the culprit ?

After a night of frustration and constant dling of different players I finally found something that actually played both of my verbatims dvd-r and LD01 DVD-r on my Optorite drive. I took my drive downstairs and dl the Powerpack DVD decoder for Windows Media player to allow it to play dvds and guess what it played my movies flawlessly, howeveer, the LD01 media did not play as smooth on my dvd-rom. So i went ahead and dl PowerDVD 5.0 and tried playing both of my dvds on the optorite drive and both played without an hitch. So for some of you that are having problems the player for your DVD makes a DIFFERENCE as well be sure to get the DVD decoder pack and POWERDVD 5.0. Here's the links

Firmware 2.17 was meant to be for a different model of DVD-RW drive, and it was uploaded to the website by mistake. By updating to 2.17, it shouldn't have much effect to your DD0203 drive, except the LED signal might not correspond correctly. You should still be able to operate DD0203, but we strongly recommend flashing it back to 2.16. If there is no longer power going to the drive, or the drive is no longer recognized by BIOS or Windows, it is likely caused by error during the update process from the update program, but not the firmware file itself.

If you can't boot into Windows with the new 2.17 firmware, please try to flash it back to 2.16 with the DOS version update program.

Wow, I finally got an Email from Optorite and I see they also posted the same information I got in my Email on this forum.

The problem is we figured this all out by ourselves. What took so long for Optorite to come clean on messing up people's drives by posting incorrect firmware to download. How do we know we can trust future firmware updates? How do we know when we have issues we are not going to ignored for a month before we get some answers? Optorite really needs to start telling us what the firmware is fixing when they update it so we have an idea on what is going on with our drives when we have issues. How about even something on the web site explaining this and why 2.17 was pulled so we didn't have to figure it out ourselves.

The communication with the people who buy your product needs to be improved upon or you will lose a lot of customers!

Optorite, the biggest problem with the 0203 drive, is that the -R (i said -R and not +R) media that it burns CANNOT be recognized by MOST of the PC DVDROMS that are out in the market.

This is not a problem with the dvd-R brand (ritek, verbatim,imation). This is a problem of how OPTORITE burns the media, that later it cant be read by a pc dvdrom drive.

It is impossible to burn a DVD-R and give it to a friend, because he will NOT be able to read it with his PC DVDROM drive.
