Should I buy LDW-401S ?

Postby vio_man on Sun Sep 07, 2003 1:15 pm

I can buy the LiteON LDW-401S for about 180€. It's not that expensive, but I'm afraid of the media compatibility. A blank DVD+R costs about 2,5€ here in Portugal and I don't want to have coasters. Should I trust this burner or should I buy other?
I don't need a dual format burner.

I would recomend the Plextor PX-708A, it may cost more, I don't know how much it costs in Portugal. It is well worth any extra cost.

The quality, and the fact that you can write at 8x is excellent.

The media compatibility is also great.

It is also nice because if you ever want to write in Minus, you don't have to buy another burner, you already have the capability to do so.

The burner works fine. I recommend it.

Unlike DVD-R discs, there are only a handful manufacturers currently producing DVD+R discs. As long as you stick to name brands of +R discs, I doubt that you are going to have coasters with this model. Just remember that Lite-On is probably going to cut the price for this model when they introduce their dual format burner next month, and 180€ is not a bargain for a single format burner. Check out the NEC ND-1100A if you don't need the DVD+RW 4X write speed.

One unique feature of this LDW-401S is that it's able to burn Ritek made 2.4X DVD+R discs (media code RICOHJPNR00) at 4X, not sure if the burned discs will last long, though.

I'd probably get the Plex too if I were buying now. I have a Sony 500a and I've been perfectly happy with it, works fine, almost never a coaster, just not always top speed.
I'd wait for the market to shake out and see what new stuff and prices show up before christmas myself. most older dvd player will not play plus media so keep that in mind.
