Plextor 8x DVD Writer (Comments on Drive ONLY)

Postby aviationwiz on Thu Sep 04, 2003 4:55 pm

Post comments and questions about the drive only in this thread. Availibilty questions are addressed in the other thread.

First off, I haven't burned anything yet, so bear with me.

1. The Unkown Verbatim DVD-R disks I bought, are CMC Magnetics, and write at 2x. They speed was un-labeled on the packaging, those are going back.

2. The Memorex 4x DVD+R (Ricoh) are capable of 8x DVD+R Writing!

Will post more later.

Looks like I might be returning a bunch of spindles of Verbatim 4X discs to OD then, unless some are Ricoh.
I'll find out the media ID tomorrow.

Thanks for the extra confirmation on the Ricoh 4X.

Let us know how your 8X burns go.

Congrats again on the new drive!

I just checked the media section at dvdr...com again, and the 4X Verbatim DataLife (not DataLifePLUS) DVD+R in the user reviews are either Mitsubishi (MCC) or Ricoh.
Maybe they just switched to CMC?

I have my fingers crossed that I got either Ricoh or Mitsubishi; if not, they are all going back, and I'll use my Ricoh 8X compatible media until I run out or the next sale comes around.

Don't keep us hanging too long for your review, I can feel the excitement in the air LOL :)

Just picked up some Fuji 4x DVD-R, It's ID'd as Taiyo Yuden. It does 4x on the PX-708A. I got them at Comp USA, if your intrested in grabbing some for yourself.

VEFF,

The CMC DVD's are for minus, not plus.

Ah thanks for the clarification aviationwiz!
That is a relief! :)
I definitely have more than enough 8X-compatible +R media between the TDK, Memorex and Verbatim :)

The only DVD-Rs I have left are a reasonable amount of 2X Fuji from a while back, ONE Verbatim and one Maxell, since I have been burning 4X +R for a while now.

Let us know how your first burns go!

Any burns yet?
I assume you are busy with school.

Mine is "out for delivery".
Too bad I am not only at work, but we have a major project that we have been working on for months, which has a key event today, so I may have to work late...

Thanks cmbrito and welcome!

That is good news about the burning software already working fine :)

I will open one pack of my Verbatim DL 4X +R tonight and see who made them. It seems that both MCC and RICOHJPN work at 8X, so I should be ok.

I have some blank Fuji (and some HP - not many) 2.4X +R left (most of my discs are 4X +R now), that I woldn't mind burning the Fuji discs at 4X :) Thanks for that info!

Fuji (TY) 4x DVD-R written at 4x on PX-708A.

Enjoy:

That looks very good to me. I don't know what the huge line in the middle is though.

Is that good? Does anyone know what PI/PO results are acceptable? Just curious.

Thanks for the info.
So it appears guess the Plextor simply isn't (fully) supported with Nero yet,
which is understandable.

I am going to try it with Stomp tonight.

I have never tried 'Alcohol' burning software, I wonder how good it is...
Might have to check it out.

I bet it intentionally creates 'coasters', because you'll need some for the alcohol...

I dunno about to others, but the fact that I can't use Nero with my PX-708A really pisses me off. The two should work together. I don't wanna wait until Nero's new version on the 1st of October.

guys be sure to send media compatibility issues to Plex asap. I'm sure for the first couple weeks they're watching things like a hawk and should be pretty proactive.
