Plextor PX-708A review thread (ordered mine today - Sept 2).

Postby VEFF on Tue Sep 02, 2003 2:53 pm

I ordered my Plextor PX-708A today.
I was going to post in the other thread, but since it is 4 pages long, and deals mostly with the availability of the burner, I decided to make a new "review" thread for owners to post in.

I should hopefully have it by the weekend - since I selected upgraded shipping for about $8 more - at which point I will post my comments/review.
Burners only:

That's the lowest price that I've seen on the NET! Too bad they are only selling the beige color :(

Might want to try Ricoh DVD+R discs. The one that came with my Lite-On LDW-401S shows (under Nero CD-Speeds disc info) that the recording speed is "2.4x-4.0x (with this recorder)".

"With this recorder"? Hmmmm...

I don't have the cash to order right now, but newegg has them in stock.
In the time it took me to check it from the auto-notify email, register for the forum, and post, they have gone from 37 in stock to 32.
So if you want it, don't hesitate, wherever you get it, I'm sure there aren't all that many to go around if newegg only got a few dozen.
As of now, they sold out at 5:05pm CDT. Only took like half an hour.

I think something screwy happened there.

Nope. I'm going to wait for Plex to send me one. If it performs well, I'll buy it then.

I meant besides you, cause I know Plex is sending you one. Don't they also give you a small discount if you want to buy it and then you just keep that drive?

Ian... I'd be surprised if they didn't do that.

BTW you hear back or have an opportunity to ask your contact there about 8X -R writing capabilities with a FW upgrade? Since Verbatim announced 8X -R, seems like that would be something for them to investigate. They're making a big point of saying they're the first with 8X writing, I'd think that being able to write to both formats @ 8X is a worthwhile endeavor since it allows them a significant point of differentialtion from the competition.

Given my past experience with Plex, I think it's safe to assume the drive will do just as well as the top drives on the market. Hugely better? Dunno, but well enough for a simpleton like me? Most likely.

Glad to see another teacher on line with similar interests to me, Ian.

I am a computer Science and Math teacher in Toronto.

I am thinking about getting together about 10 teachers and students
and make a bulk order of the Plextor from CDW.

I will report if they give me a price break.

I ordered mine from NewEgg, but it will arrive on Monday most likely.
Whoever gets it first, please try some media and let me know if any of it works at 8X.

Changed to 2nd Day FedEx, so I should start playing with it over the weekend.

Sounds like Verbatim Datalife Plus 4X +R is the way to go.

All the Verbatim 4X I have bought are DataLife (without the 'Plus').
The 2.4X say 'Plus' and are either MCC - Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp (not to be confused with CMC :) ) or Ricoh Japan, or even CMC now, it appears.

The 4X are apparently Ricoh Japan, which is the same as all mty other 4X +R media (Memorex and TDK), so that means I hopefully already own a good amount of 8X0compatible media; fingers crossed!!!

I will check the media ID of two (one black bottom, one gray bottom) of the 4X spindles when I get my 708A.

I don't know if it depends on the store, or geographic reason...

A list with recommended media is now available @plextor.be.
As it looks media with mfr ID "MCC.....002", "RICOHJPNR01" and "YUDEN000T01" should burn in 8x.

Thanks!
That is excellent news!!!!!!!!
Glad I bought a good amount of TDK 4X and Memorex 4X on sale, all with a media ID = RICOHJPNR01.

I hope the Verbatim 4X I bought last week and this week are also Ricoh!
We shall soon see!
I intentionally bought both black and gray bottom spindles in case
there is any difference...
