SONY or PIONEER DVD-writer??

Postby PhantomDJ on Tue Sep 02, 2003 3:30 pm

Hi Everyone,

I am new here. I would like to buy a DVD-Recorder.
Mainly for movie-recording and sometimes data-backup.
I was thinking of the SONY DRU500A and the PIONEER DVR-A06
I there anyone who could recommend one of the above?
Any experiences??
Or is there another brand I should try??

PS I own a Genuine Intel P4 1,6 GhZ with 512 DDRAM

Thx.

Sony DRU500 or Pioneer A06

Postby sqlb on Tue Sep 02, 2003 4:19 pm

I have both Sony DRU500 & Pioneer A06. They are both excellent drives. I do prefer the Pioneer over the Sony. It just seems faster though both units have never failed to burn anything I feed them. I suggest though that you get an external model and run it using Firewire. Hope this helps.

If you are going to be using a lot of *cheap* media, the Pioneer is the better choice (better media tolerance, with both - and + it would appear from my tests). Apart from that, the Pioneer "feels" more robust to me (that's purely subjective though) and of course the Pioneer is a well-proven base design, having been used in many thousands of duplicators for a couple of years now.

Both drives have their merits though.

I would go with the Pioneer. Specially, when thr new firmware that takes rip speed limit of, 2x for all 1x media and of course RPC1, is more stable. It's jut a Beta version and has some already reported problems but the firmware is out. Now, it's just a couple of days before it will be fully functional.

Good Luck!

I am in the same boat and MaximumPC did a full comparision of the 510 vs. the A06 and the Pioneer soundly beat the Sony in writing speeds (by soundly we're talking all of a minute or two but it was faster...). They loved both drives, but they thought the Pioneer brought more to the table. Sony:8, Pioneer:9. Since I am modding my drives, I will probably go with the Pioneer since it is a easy to remove face plate. Good luck...you can't really go wrong with either!

The Sony drive can write to DVD+R media at 4x with a firmware update.

The Pioneer A05/106 has one firmware that takes rip speed limits as well as it is RPC1 and writex 2x on 1x media.. Try the rpc1 web page and yo'll get all the info you need...

No, no ,no!!!! :o

The new firmware 1.6 has all the limitations that 1.5 has (not talking about burn quality)... The firmware that i was talking in my previous post is a hacked one. It has the same features has 1.6 but without the speed limit and of course RPC1. It's your choice to use or not to use the firmware... Read more about it and you'll see what i'm talking about...
