I think this is a Windows XP issue. My Windows XP does all kinds of weird things, although the Optorite DD0203 works perfectly and recognizes the media with no problem.
Example: When I boot my Win XP with software disk already in the drive (CD-ROM or DVD-R), the Windows Explorer shows the disk title and contents, but when I replace the disk with different one, Explorer shows the title and contents of the previous disk. I cannot access to any file and launch any program from a new disk. I had to remove the disk from the drive, reboot the system and install the new disk in order to get Win XP recognize it. Now I found easier way: remove the old disk from the drive, hit refresh in Explorer, and when Windows asks me to insert the disk, I insert the new one. Same thing was happening with my brother's Win XP, but he had a problem with floppy disk drive instead while the CD-ROM was properly recognizing the newly inserted CD-ROM disks.
Another example: When I fresh install Windows XP on my system using EPO DVD-ROM drive, the Windows loads perfectly, but after installing the Windows this DVD-ROM drive does not recognize any CD-ROM or DVD-ROM at all, including the same Win XP installation disk.
May be these stories have nothing to do with the problem that you are experiencing with the Optorite drive, but I just want to state that there are many issues with XP, and yours is probably also related to the OS. I have a good experience with Optorite drive so far, and if your DD0203 behaves the same way even after replacing it, then the problem may be in the OS. It is interesting though that the issue still persists with the drive installed in different Win XP systems.
