Optorite will not read any DVD +- Media HELP

Postby Stacks on Wed Aug 27, 2003 5:10 pm

I just installed the Optorite dual format burner and I can't make it work under any circumstance. When it has no DVD recordable media in it shows up as a DVD-R drive when I place the Media it came with it changes the drive in a Cd Rom under My computer and shows that no media is present. I have tried it in three different systems running Windows XP Pro. I have contacted Optorite and followed there suggestions when it did not work I sent the drive back for RMA and was sent another one with the same problem. I have tried it as master with and without a slave drive I have installed the latest bios and installed the latest Via 4 in 1 drivers the DMA mode is 2 and working fine. ?????? any suggestions ????

Try ForceASPI
Then d/l DVDInfo and check your drive and media.

Are you using the 2.16 firmware?

I have a similar problem with the drive detecting media though Windows Explorer. It never detect media properly, but through my experience it is just a windows problem. When I open up Nero (Recorder- Disc Info) or Easy CD/DVD Creator, it detects fine (Disc- Disc Info).

I am not sure if this is the same issue your having but try this out.

Most of the time my windows says there is 0B Free, 0B Used on blank DVD and CD media (even with my other CD-Burner). I even saw it say on a DVD-RW that it had 5.33GB Free, after I burned on it (it was just a standard TDK 4.7GB Disc)! This is just a Microsoft problem I think, sometimes it detects properly sometimes ot don't. It might also have something to do with if you have Window's "Desktop CD Recording Enabled." This is the built in CD-Recording on WinXP, this is sometimes recommended to be disabled for 3rd party burning software (but usually not a big deal if enabled).

Let me know if this is your issue.

I also noticed that every time a disc is inserted, the dives's icon becomes a CD drive under My Computer, but this shouldn't affect whatever you intend to do. Have you actually tried to burn a DVD or CD disc with a burning software? If you insert a non-blank disc, you should be able to see the content by right click the drive's icon and select the "explore" option.

I have since used an old hard drive and put Win 98 and the drive works ok
Yes I am using firmware version 2.16. I attempted to use several software programs....Alcohol 120 and Nero and still was told place media in burner even though it had a blank 4.7 GiG disk in it. I havent had time to try any of your suggestions but I will try them all when time allows and let you know.

I think this is a Windows XP issue. My Windows XP does all kinds of weird things, although the Optorite DD0203 works perfectly and recognizes the media with no problem.

Example: When I boot my Win XP with software disk already in the drive (CD-ROM or DVD-R), the Windows Explorer shows the disk title and contents, but when I replace the disk with different one, Explorer shows the title and contents of the previous disk. I cannot access to any file and launch any program from a new disk. I had to remove the disk from the drive, reboot the system and install the new disk in order to get Win XP recognize it. Now I found easier way: remove the old disk from the drive, hit refresh in Explorer, and when Windows asks me to insert the disk, I insert the new one. Same thing was happening with my brother's Win XP, but he had a problem with floppy disk drive instead while the CD-ROM was properly recognizing the newly inserted CD-ROM disks.

Another example: When I fresh install Windows XP on my system using EPO DVD-ROM drive, the Windows loads perfectly, but after installing the Windows this DVD-ROM drive does not recognize any CD-ROM or DVD-ROM at all, including the same Win XP installation disk.

May be these stories have nothing to do with the problem that you are experiencing with the Optorite drive, but I just want to state that there are many issues with XP, and yours is probably also related to the OS. I have a good experience with Optorite drive so far, and if your DD0203 behaves the same way even after replacing it, then the problem may be in the OS. It is interesting though that the issue still persists with the drive installed in different Win XP systems.
