Making backup copies of xBox games

Postby tig2002 on Tue Aug 26, 2003 5:43 pm

I own a few xBox games, but after looking at how my kids take care of xBox game disks, I am sure these disks will become unreadable pretty soon. So I decided to make backup copies of these xBox games using my Optorite DD0203 burner, same way as I backed up my own DVD movies:

1. Rip the contents of the disk using DVD Decryptor
2. Shrink the contents using DVDShrink (if necessary)
3. Create an image file using DVD Image Tool
4. Burn the disk with DVD Decryptor

or

3. Burn the disk with Nero using the decrypted (or shrunk) VOB files

I found out that this method does not work for backing up xBox games. First of all, when I install the xBox game in the DVD burner to rip the files (Need 4 Speed Hot Pursuit), the Windows Explorer shows approx. 13MB of contents of the disk. So I thought: it is either Windows Explorer does not see something that DVD Decryptor will, or these are the contents of the entire game - 13MB(?). Using the DVD backup method I backed up this xBox game, but after installing the burned DVD in the xBox system I got nothing but... startup screen.

Is there something that I am missing? Or something that my computer does not see? I don't think that the "Need 4 Speed" xBox game takes only 13MB of 4.7GB (or 9.4GB) disk space when it takes almost 700MB on PC version CD. Any idea on how to make backup copy of the xBox game?

I strongly believe that these DVD backup tools are great - many thanks to those who create them and provide these tools for free! I strongly believe that we have the right to make backup copies of DVD movies or computer software that we legally own, because I do not wish to go to retail store and pay full price for the movie that I already paid for after the media accidentally became defective. We do not pay $10-$30 for just a DVD disk or $$$ for disk(s) with computer software. We pay for the right to watch the movie as many times as we want, and to reinstall the software ON THE SAME COMPUTER as many times as we want!

Yes, all these discs are copy protected. As far as I know, you will not be able to make working backup copies directly. You will probably also need a hardware modifcation for your console. Don't take my word for it, though, since I don't own or play computer games. I would suggest you do some searching and reading at http://club.cdfreaks.com .

I believe you need a mod chip to play backups, came across a thread @ cdfreaks.

What cfitz said...and those backup tools only work for DVD *VIDEO* titles. Games are not video discs. You have to have a mod chip in the xbox in order to be able to play the games..as for making them...that's another story...

You'll need a chipped Xbox first of all. Then you copy the game from your Xbox and transfer it to your PC over FTP on your network. Then you make an ISO image of it with some special program. Then you burn it. I don't know the specifics, but do a little searching on google, I'm sure you'll find something.

Try the gamescopyworld website. It's very good and has some tuturiols, links and patches for the games...

I used to go there and pick up the patches for my PS 1 games. It's quite simple.. I assume that backing up X-Box games isn't mutch different.

Good Luck!!!

Thanks for all your comments.

I went through the links that you provided and found out that making backup copies of xBox games is a quite complicated process, including modifying the xBox itself.

I wish there was a legal software on the market that would allow owners of DVD video / xBox or PS games / PC software to make backup copies of what they legally own. I own GoVideo dual deck VCR that allows me to make backup copies of any copy protected VHS movie that I own. This VCR has been manufactured back in 2000. GoVideo was sued by video industry giants so many times that now their dual deck VCR’s will not make copies of copy protected VHS movies anymore as well as any other dual-deck VCR’s or DVD-VCR combos. What about radar detectors that you can by in electronics stores…? Are people allowed to catch cop radar’s signal before they get speeding ticket?

Radar detectors are officially legal in most US states.
I believe there are two areas remaining (I believe Washington DC and the state of Virginia, but I am not 100% sure) that still outlaw detectors.
Connecticut used to be the third, but they legalized detector use a while back.

LOL...constitutional right to access radiowave frequency bands.
i'm sure this is what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they wrote the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the land of Mordor, where the Shadows lie
