Ritek Price Difference Logo vs No Logo

Postby tazdevl on Thu Aug 21, 2003 2:07 pm

Anyone know why?

www.allmediaoutlet.com has the Ritek w/Logo 4X -R for $1.55 and the Ritek Silver for $1.90... for a 25 pack.

Because you pay more to have the logo on there. Your paying for a visible brand name.

Interesting. I have to say I just don't know -- these discs are selling for around the $1.50(+tax) mark in the UK, and the difference in price between brands is only a few pennies. The +R discs from Ritek are exactly the same.

I have been hearing **RUMOURS**, though (so don't take this as fact) that Ritek are about to change dye types from their existing Azo hybrid to a more standard organic dye. It's possible that these discs have different dyes. But as I say, it isn't confirmed and I was under the impression that this wasn't going to happen for a couple of months anyway.

I have both and looking at the bottom, same color. I'm not sure how saife it is to assume its the same kind of dye.

As you say jase, its odd that the price difference would be so great.

I would say that the unbranded media costs more because it was never prepared for retail sale and is better for labeling or other low volume production needs. But, who knows? 8)

Most unbranded media ends up with some distributor's dodgy brand name on it. It's only a minority of media that stays brandless.

There must be some other reason though. Either

1) an error by the reseller;

2) the reseller is pulling a fast one by trying to maximise profit on this line;

3) the cheaper discs are of inferior quality (reject stock, grade B, old stock, overprints etc etc);

4) the more expensive discs are a higher-than-usual standard, eg they were originally destined as OEM stock for someone like TDK. Unlikely though as the supplier would have mentioned this, you would think.
