Nearest one is in Rochester, roughly 2 hours away. This is Minneapolis/St. Paul, not a small town. They should really open up here.

Your right there is one like 20 minutes away but...

SONY - DRU500A Internal DVD ± RW Drive / 497971 = $449.95
SONY - DRX500UL External DVD±RW Drive / 500017 = $599.95

I am getting the OEM DW-U10A for 280$.

280 + tax = 322.07
449 + tax = 516.46
difference
194.39$ ... 200$ for Warranty is a little insane.

except if i can get them to give me warranty but i don't think they would since i didn't buy it from them...

Just two important question that is still unanswered.
can I flash the DW-U10A with DRU-500A or DRU-500AX firmware ??
or it won't work ?

Two What kind of tests can i do to make sure it won't die for like 6 months or more. Could I burn on a dvd-rw like 10 times and 2-3 regular dvd-r ?

the extra 2 year warranty is $49.99 well worth it, and about that bad burning, mine has never done that, i just went through a whole 50 spindle of 4x dvd-r's in like 5 days, and it still goes strong, and the c1/c2 errors, are lower than most drives

you have to buy it from a reputable source, like any internet site, or any retailer, then go to staples and buy the replacement or protection plan

Would a distributor be considered a "reputable source" ?

Check out:

They have quite a few manufacturers and are at a pretty good price. For minus, the Princo DVD-R's are pretty cheap. For Plus, I'd recomend some Ritek media.
