Will recent writers be flashable to support 4x DVD+RW?

Postby lgmayka on Sat Aug 16, 2003 8:50 am

The list of DVD writers

http://www.thedolphinreview.com/LinksDa ... riters.htm

indicates that right now, the Sony DRU510A (in its various forms and brands) is the only multiformat DVD writer that can write DVD+RW at 4x speed. Can we hope or expect that other recent multiformat writers--such as the NEC 1300A, the Optorite DD0203, and especially the LG GSA-4040B--will be flashable to support writing a DVD+RW at 4x speed? Or is that highly unlikely?

Not true,LG 4040B will write 4x -R/+R and Iomega will be releasing their "Super DVD" -R/+R,DVD-RAM writer next month.
As to your question of a firmware update:it's not possible because max. burn speed is set by the controller and laser.HP got in alot of trouble last year for saying their 100 series DVD+R/W writer would be flashed to DVD+R,but later on HP said "send us $99 and you will get a new drive"...they got sued.

I'm referring specifically to DVD+RW, not +R or -R. Didn't I read that Sony's model originally burned DVD+RW at 2.4x, and only later Sony issued new firmware that supported 4x DVD+RW? Of course, I don't know whether anyone sells 4x DVD+RW media yet anyway.

No, the DRU-500A/X writes to DVD+RW media at only 2.4x. According to Sony, the only way you'll get 4x DVD+RW writing speeds is to buy the DRU-510A.
