Pioneer 104 + 4x media, can i burn at 2x??

Hi all,

I've been burning successfully on my 2x4all firmware-enhanced Pioneer 104 dvd-burner using 2x Princo's, but the shop that I buy my media from is telling me that they'll no longer be able to get ANY MORE 2x media of any brand.

I remember reading a long time ago that using "4x" media on a Pioneer 104 was a bad idea, that the resultant discs wouldn't work, is that true?

Am I not able to buy "4x" media and burn them at 2x on my 104?

If it helps, my system specs are:

AMD Athlon XP 1800+
Asus A7N8X
512 Mb ram
Pioneer 10X dvd-rom
Pioneer 104 dvd-burner
Nero 6 Ultra
Stomp RecordNow MAX 4.5
30GB hdd
Windows XP

Oh, and I mainly burn DVD movies which I've "DVD Shrink-ed".

Please don't tell me to "buy 2x media elsewhere" because I'm hoping not to have to do that because all other shops are too expensive for me. "My" shop only sells Princo 2x media and the rest of their DVD-R brands are all "4x". and if it's possible to just keep buying Princo's but "4x" and still use them without any problems burning at 2x, that'd be great!

Hi Ian,

According to that URL the firmware for my drive (104) is version 1.32.

I'm using 1.33 2x4all, the one that enables me to burn "1x" media at 2x.

Does that mean that I'm covered and I can go ahead and buy those 4x media???

It says on that site that if you DO NOT upgrade the firmware, both drive and media will get damaged, so obviously I want to make sure that I'm already using the "correct" firmware before going ahead and buying (and subsequently using) the 4x media.

Please confirm to ease my conscience!!
