Will DVD Burners Replace CD Burners?

Postby craiger on Sat Aug 09, 2003 10:18 pm

Hi. What do you need a DVD Burner for? Is it mainly for just making home movies and editing them with special effects? Thanks, Craig.

Of course they'll replace CD burners eventually. I see it happening as soon as the drives and the media are affordable.

You mean they haven't? :)

The only thing I use CD's for now is music. Data backups, movies, etc. all go onto DVDs. Faster burns (w/4x discs, anyway), ~6.4x the capacity (fewer discs!).

With Lite On's newest DVD+R/RW drive running $144 on newegg, and discs about $1 a pop, whats not to like?

Sure, CD's are a bit cheaper, especially when places like Target have 100 packs of Memorex's for $19, but 6 or 7 cds or one dvd...hmm...

There will be 8x DVD writers out in a few months and the price of DVD writers is dropping too but they will never make CD's obsolete because of the price of media and worldwide acceptance.Did TIVO and DVD recorders make the VCR obsolete? No,those new devices are still too expensive for the average person and VCR machines and tapes are relatively cheap and convenient.
I have a DVD writer but I will continue to burn audio CD's and the occasional VCD because it's cheap and will work in all my players.

Business first. DVD media and drives are much more profitable than CD media and drives. Ritek and all other important optical storage makers are switching to DVD recordables this year. Even LG and Samsung are concentrating on 8x speed DVD+R/-R.

Regarding media prices:
Note that DVD media holds six times as much as CD media.
If you take that into account, DVD media is actually cheaper than CD media in most cases.

e.g. BestBuy prices:
The average 100 pack of CD-Rs is about $38, excluding special deals.
A 100 pack of DVD-+R is $189, excluding special deals.

6 * $38 = $228 price for 600 CD-Rs is more than 100 DVD blanks.
or $189 / 6 = $31.50, price of 16.6 DVD blanks is less than 100 CD-Rs.

Actually 8X DVD writers are due out any day now.
The Plextor PX-708A has been delayed since August 7; the ETA for this drive is now August 12 (today).
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

LiteOn 52246S (another)
LiteOn 52327S 52X CD-RW

when DVD burners and media become more mainstream and more popular, and more dominant in the market, the competition between manufacturers will become more fierce and theh lucrative profit margins they're enjoying now will erode.

This is a follow-up to my first post,
The day all car stereos, portables and DVD players support DVD-AUDIO is the day CD's are obsolete.CD's made the cassette obsolete but the cassette is still around and CD's are light-years better than cassette.....DVD is only a few miles away from CD.
