Plextor Premium 52x media compatibility

I did some testing in preparation for an upcoming test. Here are my results.

Can other Plextor Premium owners chime in on what is the:

- worst possible media
- best possible media

that you have tried yourself for Plextor Premium?


All burns: Plextor Premium (fw. 1.03) at 52x (PoweRec disabled) with Nero 5.5.10.42
All tests: LiteOn 48246s (fw. 52246s / 6S0F) at 48x (manual set) with Kprobe 1.1.21
All ATIP: Plextor Premium (fw. 1.03) with Feurio 1.66.2ß

I can't say with having PoweRec off. I always have it on.

My best media has been Verbatim (MC) 48x.

My worst has been Memorex 40x (TY).

I think that's right about the worst media. Can't really say. I know that's right about the best media.

I have to say I find some of those results surprising! But I suppose even the Plextor Premium has a few incompatabilities.
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

aviationwiz, you are of course right. PoweRec does improve compatibility on some media, but it can also lower the writing speed down to 32x even on 48x rated media.

Also, on some discs, it lowers the rating speed, resulting in a worse measuring burn than when burned with PoweRec off :)

Still, I agree that for normal use, I'd use my PoweRec on, unless I knew some specific media to burn better with PoweRec off.

What I find interesting in the results is that none of the Ritek media are particularly good and most of them are in fact bad.

I still think that Taiyo Yuden is the best media for this drive at 52x, it' just too difficult at times to get hold of where I live.

thanks for the scan. Did you burn that Maxell with LiteOn?

Different brand Ritek's (same subtype, same write power, same certified speed) seem to behave differently when burned on my Premium and scanned on LiteOn (or CDSpeed Scanned on Plextor).

I wonder how many different "versions" there are of current 48x Ritek disc or if these are just batch variance differences?

thanks again for spotting that!

On a related note, how do some people know if an ATIP is faked and the disc really does not come from a factory that the ATIP points to? There must have been threads about this as well, but I must have missed them.

The RiTEK TG media is all the same, as far as I know. Quality control is another issue. (Not to be confused with RiTEK G or others.)
If you want to know that the ATIP is correct, buy reputable media. :wink:
Yes, it was burned on the 7S at 52x.
