DVD ROM reader (for DVDR disks) Samsung too slow!

well ok i have the 16x dvdrom from samsung and its crap.
basically it starts reading dvd-r disks at 2x or so then about 2 minutes later it can break the 4x barrier.. this is causing me nightmares when burning dvd-r disks at 4x! (not that it really matters cause of burnproof function) but i think its the burn disk will be cleaner if i can provide consistent stream of data..

is there anything i can do the fix this.? i know toshiba has some good firmware hack..

what other drives can read dvd-+r disks at fast speed from beginning to end.?
I heard liteon can do this. is this true?

I had a Liteon 166s and did some testing with the latest firmware. When reading -R media, it started @ ~3.57x.

I have a Toshiba M1712 now, it's a perfect drive when reading DVD media with the hacked firmware! Highly recommended!
