CDSpeed ScanDisc File test is slow

why is the speed in CDSpeeds ScanDisc File test slow?

scanned a CD, only got as high as 26x or so.
same CD in ScanDisc Surface Scan appeared to scan faster.
in the Quality Test and Trasfer Rate, the graph was a very nice one, increasing regularly up to a final speed of 43x (this is a 40x burner).

if it makes any difference, the data on the CD was:
12Mb rar file
308Mb rar file
965Kb exe file
1 directory whose contents:
35 subfolders, 135 files, total 375Mb

I would suppose because in this test, it is not just reading the files but verifying them as well. The verification process would take extra time.

what do you mean it is verifying the files?
what does "verifying" mean?

The test consists of two parts, the File Test which simply reads all files on the disc and reports all errors.

to my understanding, it just reads the file, makes sure that the entire file is readable.
so why should that be slower than reading the entire data of the CD as in the (say) transfer rate test?

Please excuse the choice of words. I don't know why the speed is slower (if it is), but might assume it could be because the file error test may be more stringent than some of the other tests. If so, perhaps this requires a lower speed. If you have verified the lower speed, this would be a good question for Erik Deppe.

well, i have "verified" the slower speed.
the ScanDisk File Test shows you the speed continuously as it is progressing.
i just looked at the numbers during the test, never went above that 26x.

repeated with another CD, same observations as before.

DMA is enabled, latest VIA 4-in-1 INF driver installed, standard Microsoft (not VIA) IDE drivers, WinXP no SP1.
