What Happened? (Windows XP Problem)

I just came back to my computer to find that all of my settings have been erased. my background was changed to default, my quicklaunch bar was gone, it was just like I reinstalled but my files are still there except everything in my documents...I lost all of my pictures that i so foolishly stored in my pictures. Is there a way to fix this?
