Need advice on new drive, my LiteOn crapped out...

Well, im 90% sure my LiteOn 48x12x48x OEM (LTR-48125W) has crapped out, i got it just over a year ago, and ive tested it with both the original fimware and latest firmware on LiteOn's site.

These are the results when i test a Memorex BLACK 48x CDr (Prodisc) i burnt last week... results are ugly. On every CD Nero reports lots of errors between the 10 and 20 min mark. This CD was burnt at 12x.

Average: 756.48

I get the same results with Fuji 48x (TY), Sony 48x (SONYCorp), TDK 48x (CMC eek), and some bulk no name crappers.

EDIT Note: Ive tested the same CDrs in Nero, Alcohol 120%, and CDRWin 5. In Nero if i have it test the CD after write and it stops 10-20% in.


So, right now im 90% certain im going with the "SAMSUNG 52X/24X/52X CD-RW DRIVE 8MB 252B" burner, since i can get it retail for $70 CND... i mite also be looking at the DVD-Rom combo one, 352 or something i believe if its around the same price.

/BEEF: I have the Lite-On 16x DVD-Rom now, and it can;t read the Black Memorex CDrs and i sometimes have to reinsert cds 1-3 times before it will read them and XP detects them. So thats reason to go with the combo drive.



Im interested in write quality more than anything, i wish i could afford a Plextor but i really can't, and since my 4x Mitsumi burner has lasted for 3yrs and its done more burns than my Liteon did im worried about buying an expensive Plextor. At the same time i dont trust Lite-On anymore, and LG's write quality ive read is average. The other burner im looking at was the Acer (see other thread), but i was informed Acer is sorta not good.

If i were to get a Plextor, it would be 1 of these, which is $70 more than i was prepared to spend...

if my Lite-On were to die, I would replace it with a Lite On. I guess that Lite-On drives might be like restaurants. Good restaurants have bad days. I say give them another chance. that is all I know.
I had an aopen that stopped working, I let a friend try it in his computer and it worked so he gave me $15 for it, I guess reinstalling windows would have worked but oh well.

Deffinetly go with the Plextor Premium 52x32x52, it is well worth the extra cost.

The Samsung is a decent drive, but the reviews do not support the price, in comparison. No matter how many LiteOn's might give me trouble, I'll keep buying them because they are the best value. And I'll say it again, you can't buy faster, better quality burns on a wide range of media, at any price.

The problem with Lite-On for me is that the drives tend to break, and the performance of the drive tends to diminish after being used for a while.

My LTR-48125W is still going strong, but I noticed it's not as good as before. My first LTD-163D crapped out on me after about three days.

When the drives work, they work well, but they tend to just crap out. I have also heard of a lot of stories from friends about the Lite-On drives crapping out after a while.

What exactly do you mean by crapping out? Wont burn anymore at all? or just burn bad quality? huh?

I've found LG drives to be better than LiteOn in terms of longevity. LiteOn drives do tend to deteriorate over time. Doesn't bother me though, I just keep an eye on the C1 error count and get shot of them on ebay when they're about to go lol.

A word of warning on Samsung drives. I've had around 5 or 6 Samsung optical drives over the last five years (DVDROM, CDROM, CD writers) and they've had a number at work, and I haven't seen a single one last more than 18 months -- many crap out completely after only around 3-6 months. I might have simply been extremely unlucky, and I have to say I swear by Samsung's consumer electronics products (their TVs in particular are very long-lived) but I'm not sure I'd buy another one.

I'm still very afraid to buy a rebranded DVD-burner with Ricoh innards...

Depend on your usage pattern, all drives can die, no matter which brand you use. Ever since companies started mass producing in big Chinese factories to save cost, we just have to lower our expectations on drive's life. If I were you I would stick with Liteon, they are cheap, versatile, and more reliable than most drives (Sony, Memorex, TDK don't all rebadge Liteon for no reason).

I had (and lots of friends) often problems with Liteon-drives. The CD-Roms were real crap, and my Liteon 12101b was the worst drive i ever had. And my LTD-122 was a bad drive, too. It not recognizes CD-RW and many DVD-Rom´s

When i ask some friends who had their drives long time, they said, the best drives are Plextor and Teac.

I own a LG 8481 and a Cyberdrive CW088, i completely happy with this drives.
