Burner slowing down my comp

I just recently bought a new pc. It came with the Artec WSM52X. Everytime that I try to burn or if it is reading data, my computer slows down pretty bad. The mouse starts to delay. Also, it doesnt even look like it burns at 52X or even 48X cause my cds are only 48X. My friend has a 42X and it seems to burn a lot faster than this. I have an AMD 2500, 512 RAM, 80gig HDD in case you need to know. I'm running Nero Express. If anybody can give me some feedback and possibly a fix or even a reason why it's like that, I would greatly appreciate that. TY

Is DMA enabled?

yeah it was already enabled

did you check it again? XP will sometimes revert to PIO.

I dont have WinXP, I have Win 2000 but I just checked it again

do you think that if I upgrade to a better Sony burner that would get rid of this? Is it just the burner or is it some setting in there that I need to find?

Double check your BIOS to see that it is set to auto-detect the IDE. Then go to device manager and uninstall the IDE controller that the drive is on. Reboot and go back to sheck thet DMA is enabled. Your symptom is classic for PIO transfer mode. It has nothing to do with the burner, it's the transfer of data that's the problem. Also check all other drives for DMA status.

hey guys than you so much. Yeah I had only checked under one of the IDE controllers and I have 2 of them. Sorry about that but it's working a lot better now. Is that gonna solve my other burning issue as that it doesnt seem to burn at the fastest that it can. Thanx again for all the help you guys kick @$$ .
