A File Connot Contain Any Of The Following Characters \ / : * ? " < > |

My Question Is....
Is There A Way To Disable This?
If So I Am Running Windows XP Pro.
We ridin around with guns the size of Little Bow Wow What you know about a.k's and a.r 15's
Equipped, with night vision, shell catchers and dem things

No. Limitation of the file system.

What do you mean "Limitation of the file system"??
so your telling me that there is no way to change this?

Nope, I don't think there's any way to change it. What tazdevl meant was that the file system (the way Windows keeps track of files) wasn't made to handle filenames containing those characters.

You can not use those characters but you can use ones which your keyboard dosn't have keys for.

Such as ± º ¿ ¬ ¼ « » § æ ç

As is said above, it is a limitation of the file system.

If you want to name files and folders like that, try Linux, that should be able to do it.

its a limitation on the file system? you mean NTFS & Fat32
what does linux have that windows xp doesn't?

These characters are excluded from Windows operating systems by design. The characters are all used in DOS commands, switches, and wildcards, etc.. Since DOS windows are addressable from Windows, these characters are purposely excluded so that there are no accidents or confusing incidents caused by improper use of DOS operations.

There is no option to disable this exclusion, as it is a safety feauture of the Windows operating systems.

A file system determines the set of characters allowed.
No way to change.

It's been that way with ALL computers since computers were first used.

Some file systems allow more characters than others, but you are forced to live with the restrictions of whichever file system you are using.

Unless you use a different file system, there's
