Sony DRU-510a has horrible playback

Postby GSVette on Sat Jun 28, 2003 12:14 am

I've got a Sony DRU-510a that burns just fine, but when i play a dvd the playback is awful. It studders and is distorted. It also will give file not found type errors when i try to install from a CD or DVD. I have tried multiple software players and get the same results. I installed it in a different PC and it worked fine. I have narrowed it down to an I/O problem but dont know what to do from there. I used the IDE cable that came with the burner but it does not look like a ATA cable, it looks like a standard IDE. My motherboard is a IWill KA266-R. Any ideas?

Zero issues here.

Few questions...

What operating system?
What software are you using for playback?
How do you have it jumpered? Cable select? Master? Slave?
Is there other drives on the same channel?
Have you looked for any BIOS updates for your motherboard?
Are you overclocking?
Have you downloaded the latest Via Hyperion drivers?
What kind of media are you using when you burn?
Have you checked for any updates to your burning software?
What other kinds of burning software do you have on the computer?

FYI that is a standard IDE cable. It is ATA100 compliant though.

OS is Windows xp SP1.
Software is PowerDVD.
The drive is on its own channel by itself as the master.
The bios is up to date.
No overclocking.
The media and burning software is irrelivant. I'm just trying ot play store bought DVD at this point.

I my just say screw it and by a new mobo. The IWill is getting pretty old and this isn't the first problem the board has caused me.

Not a bad call.. Iwill is a Tier 3 manufacturer,.. in the land of PC tech, that's bad. I'd say go with Abir, Asus, Tyan, Epox. All are making solid motherboards. I haven't had any issues with the Via KT266A chipset other than those that pertain to the audigy.

Burning software is relevant because Roxio EasyCD and most other burning software don't get along well. You'd be amazed how and where conflicts show up.

Hoxlund isn't having any problems from what I've seen.

Yeah, me and my IWill Mobo like to play this little game where it pretends not to detect the keyboard and i get mad and have to unplug the PSU to get it to work. I will probably go with a MSI K7N2 Delta board, beacuse they have yet to let me down.

I also installed a ATA133 cable on a whim and got the same results. My burning software is newset version of Nero.

I'd say mobo is the most likely culprit.

Thought of a couple other things.

Did you install the latest Via Hyperion drivers? Just released a new version, 4,48.

Also, is DMA enabled on the drive? Have you downloaded any updates for PowerDVD?

My board does have the Via chipset, its got the ALi. I managed to track down the latest drivers for it but it still doesn't work. Gonna order a nForce board tomorrow.

got my sony problem resolved, what happened was i tried to burn red dragon last night, and it errored in nero said drive reset or something

the LED just wouldn't stop blinking even after restart and shutdown

so i looked at recepit and wouldn't you know it, exactly 30 days, today since i bought it

i went to best buy, exchanged with their last one in stock

drove to staples and bought their extended protection plan for 3 years ($59.99)

now im covered for 3 years, if anything happens to it, i just bring mine in and i get to leave with a brand new one

hoxlund,

Are you saying that Staples sold you an extended warranty on a DVD burner that you bought at Best Buy?

Just wanted to clarify as I just purchased a 510 from BB myself.

Thanks.

hoxlund is reformatting right now, and reinstalling everything as well, he might not be online for a while...

but i had a chat with him about it earlier, and he said yes... he works at Staples, so he would know... Yeah, they sell Extended Protection Plans at Staples, just go there... he told me to get the Purple Fronted Pamphlet, and it covers the drive for 3 years. I never knew that is possible... i told him i thought stores would cover items bought only on their store, but he said not for staples...

for this matter, i even called Staples here near my place, to confirm. and they said yes, they do offer the protection plans.. and here's what's better... I asked them if they would cover the drive if i bought it on an online store, and they said yes... but whatever is the amount you spent for the drive, that would be the amount credited on the staples gift card just in case something went wrong with it... if you bought the drive for $290, you will have $290 funds to buy a new one... if you bought it for $350, you will have $350 funds to buy a new one... that's how i understand it.

but, to make sure, call your local Staples store before making purchases... that's the best thing.

ahh, im back, damn it feels good to have a fresh copy installed of xp

anyways, yes thats how it goes, just bring in your receipt from any other store, or in this case an invoice if bought online. all you have to have is at least 30 days left on the manufacturer's original warranty to get the protection plan

i bought my 3 year protection plan at staples for $59.99

they wanted to charge me $100 for a 2 year at best buy

and please don't call em extended warranty's there so much more than that, offers 24/7 tech support as well, and full refund if item is defective after 3 years

2 year is $49.99 btw

Thanks for the info on the Staples plan. That sounds like a really good idea. I got a pretty good deal on my burner at Best Buy, but it wouldn't hurt to have a little protection on such a pricey item.

Thanks again.

FYI if you bought it with your Mastercard/Visa (gold card or better), the associations double your warranty up to 1 year. So they cover an extra year.

Given the advances in DVD burning tech, I'm sure after 2 years if not sooner, you'll be using a different drive.

you have to watch those credit card plans, they are nightmares, like some cover parts, not labor, some labor no shipping, i know, we get trained on this sort of thing
