Cendyne 4x DVD+R/RW is it pretty good?

Postby Sharpedge on Mon Jun 30, 2003 1:54 pm

I see Staples has this onsale unitl the 5th. I have a $30 off coupon which would bring the price with rebates to $130.00. I searched and my home DVD player will only play DVD+R/RW so that seems good. But while I was doing some research at Best Buy sales person says go with a drive that does DVD-R. Which would be more expensive. The only thing that I dislike about the Cendyne is lack of software, but the price seems good.

Can any one offer some direction?

Your comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

Cendyne uses the NEC ND-1100A drive, the same drive used by many other brands. The following review by Ian should give you a good idea about this burner's performance:

If you plan on using the DVD burner to back up your data and movies for yourself, then a single format burner is good enough as long as you can get the media easily. If you plan on sending your DVD discs to share with others, then a dual format burner may be a more flexible choice. Just my two cents.

I got the same drive recently($110 + tax on $180, after rebates).
It works fine for me using Stomp Record Now Max.

The sales people don't always know what they are talking about.
What was the reason he/she gave for getting -RW as opposed to +RW?

When I bought my first DVD burner 15 months ago (ended up returning it
since it was 1st gen +RW and didn't even burn +R), I informed the sales person at Best Buy, who owned a Pioneer -RW (A03) himself, that +RW and -RW were different.
He thought all DVD burners were the same in terms of technology.
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

The salesperson commented that the -R/RW format was more compatable which in searching DVDRhelp.com I found most home drives supported both formats and checked on my 2 yearold sony and it only supports the +R/RW format.

My main use is for data backup and transferring home videos to DVD. So far from my research it seems this drive would fit the bill. My only other hesitation is with faster drives coming out. But again that does not seem to be happening until later in the 3rd Quarter. Burning 4gb in less than 15 minutes seems pretty quick to me.

Thank you again for your input and assistance.
